From needing a Google+ Account to post a comment to the war earlier in the year with the site taking down videos and giving channels copyright strikes if any single one person says that the video violates the community guidelines, even if the video itself actually does not, Youtube is probably the biggest example of a website that is a problematic fave. But recently, a new set of rules has been established that could result in the biggest backlash for the site yet:
Here's the deal: Youtube has announced that they are going to start cracking down on videos and/or channels that Google Advertising deems to be inappropriate. They are doing this because they want to start being a website where all of the videos can be watched by all ages, no matter the circumstances, unless the content is a big news story, or done in a comedic manner. Thus, they now have a new set of guidelines for all videos, and, well- let's just say that a lot of people would say that its a Right to Censor fever dream.
Now, videos that contain Inappropriate Language of any kind, that is vulgar language and profanity, are at risk of being taken down, with the possibility of a full on channel shutdown if any video posted contains that stuff.
Which I think is the biggest load of bull since a Dempsey-Mantaur-Torito hybrid. Because so many top Youtubers like to put a coin or five in the swear jar every now and then. If its really that bad, thats what placing age restrictions on the videos are for. But I don't think that a video should be removed or a channel should be canned for it.
It is not yet fully known to what extent that Youtube will use the new rule to go after people, but it seems like a REALLY dangerous rule to have, because it would be so easy to abuse that rule.
Anybody else have some thoughts on this?

This could be shitty.
I bet we will be seeing from this point forward a lot of content warnings. I mean in the video titles, descriptions, and when the video starts up.
I mean for example future Angry Video Game Nerd videos may start with 'WARNING: This video game contains strong course language, violence, and adult themes. '
I think the guy behind Dark5 mentioned on Twitter that he had to alter his videos.

I wonder if this is in regards to sexual content, rather than swearing, but Google's always been pretty incompetent in how it handles a lot of stuff with youtube.

Was hoping there'd be a thread about this. Absolutely ridiculous. Google did this for more money, never let them say otherwise. I hope the entire Net protests the crap out of it like with SOPA/PIPA.

I looked for the full set of guidelines and I just gave them a read through, and on top of swearing, these are the video topics that, if uploaded, are at risk of being deemed inappropriate: . Anything that shows partial nudity, and/or has sexual humor within the video. . Anything that is excessively violent, including footage of someone suffering a serious injury, and/ or footage or discussion of violent extremism. . Any video that promotes the selling, usage, or abuse of drugs, legal or illegal. . Any video that contains imagery and/or discussion of : Past or ongoing wars, politics, natural disasters, or tragedies.

That one is basically saying you can't make videos on certain areas of god damn history. >_>

Let me guess... those stupid prank channels or the channels that encourages it's fanbase to bully others will somehow still be around.

Egoraptor contacted Youtube about this and basically this is not a new set of rules, these have always been the rules, but Youtube is now being less vague about videos that have been flagged for any reason. A ton of videos have been flagged under these rules for years but the creators were never given an explanation past something real vague.
YT is just stepping up their game. Much ado about nothing.

If Pewdeepie, Egoraptor and one other big one (Good Mythical Morning, Markiplier etc can not think of another huge one that curses alot) unite with some no new content or other protest it would be big.

Egoraptor praised YT's decision on his twitter, and just observing how Pewds acts on his own twitter, I'm certain he doesn't really give a f***. Also, another big YTer, RubberNinja, also got an email saying the TOS hasn't changed, it's just less vague, and he's fine with it.

Phillip DeFranco who has been a longtime personality on the site just recently got his videos unmonetized, and The Young Turks had twelve of their videos censored. This isn't nothing, YouTube can tell EgoRaptor what he wants to hear but that doesn't make it the truth.

Phil DeFranco is a clickbaiter, and also a huge majority of his content uses slurs against women. Just a hunch, but his videos were more than likely unmonetized due to posting inflammatory content, a violation of YT's TOS since day 1. I saw his tweets. He can say what he wants but it doesn't make it true.

I saw a bunch of YouTuber's I follow on Twitter talking about this. I also saw Boogie2988's video on the subject, and the comment section is a cesspool of blaming 'feminism' and 'SJWs'. Seriously, what have either of those things got to do with this? Phillip DeFranco who has been a longtime personality on the site just recently got his videos unmonetized, and The Young Turks had twelve of their videos censored. I'm not a huge DeFranco fan, and he does tend to clickbait a bit, but I do watch his content from time to time (as well as listening to his podcast whenever he has an interesting guest, such as Egoraptor), and I've never once seen him use a slur against women...so I'm legitimately confused as to what you mean.

I'm sure the rule enforcement will be lax and arbitrary at best, but either way I think the only thing really preventing a viable Youtube alternative from having cropped up is nobody can afford it. The site seems to be doing everything it possibly can to piss people off and lower the overall quality of it and at some point or other it's going to bite them hard soon as someone wants to foot the bill for it.
If anything I'm amazed when they got backlash over removing the option to sort videos by release date a couple years ago they actually, like, listened and put the option back in. Because they seem to be good at not doing that.

I am guessing this move would be to try to court better advertisers or keep big ones happy. Like, say someone is paying youtube ad dollars. They'd be fine with it being in front of a makeup tutorial. Much less okay with it being a bumfight or someone doing a striptease and a "THE REST OF THIS IS TOO HOT FOR YOUTUBE, CLICK HERE".
Maybe a lot of advertisers don't fully care, but if it's Coca Cola or some other company like that, yeah, they do care.

Wouldn't be too surprised if it's also part of a further push for Youtube Red, like it leads to a, "This video is rated mature! You need to have a Youtube Red account to access it!" situation.
