Bobby Heenan with The Islanders always felt strange to me.

sunny with the legion of doom, or sunny with the godwinns (though she made it clear she was just using them because they were the champs)

Paul Heyman with Heidenreich I'd say that really only is a mismatch because of Heidenreich kind of just working better as a face. As presented as a heel he at least made sense for Heyman because there wasn't a huge gap between how he was presented and how Brock initially was, beyond that Brock is a vastly superior performer.

See also the Heyman/Ryback partnership. Which surprisingly had more homosexual undertones than the Heidenreich one considering what the latter would do with Michael Cole later.

Two WCW ones spring to mind: Ted DiBiase managing the Steiners. Teddy Long managing Jim Powers. I'll go you one better on that last one: Teddy Long managing Chris Jericho.

Does anybody know the reason Ellering was split from AOP? Was it that Ellering just didn't want to travel full time anymore or because Vince is the only "old" person that should be allowed on his shows? I met Paul at a convention and he simply said he was too busy with other things. Too busy not having to be on RAW.

The Kabuki Warriors and Paige. It was pretty blatantly something for Paige to do since she can't wrestle, but the only purpose she really served was to be betrayed by them to cement their heel turn. A purpose so perfectly served, that she'd not been associated with them on television in months anyway.

Shinsuke Nakamura and Sami Zayn. I just...don't get it? Maybe I missed something since I don't watch Raw a lot. But it just....doesn't do it for me.

Definitely HBK and Jose.
It looked like HBK was taking his pet old man for a walk.

Hulk Hogan & Jimmy Hart sticks out for me-- Hogan never needed a mouthpiece, and Hart always came across as such an irritating little shit that having him anywhere near face Hogan felt baffling. I have this feeling that they wanted to recreate RVD and Fonzie, and were like, "Ricardo has Latino blood too, it'll work!" The explanation I've heard was that it was supposed to be Mysterio and then at the very last minute they went, "Uh, no, RVD instead!" while changing nothing else. I figured it was a rib on Ricardo failing that drug test a month before.

Wasn’t Wippleman mismatched with just about everyone? I was just thinking about this the other day when I was remembering how much I liked Adam Bomb. Wippleman didn’t fit with him, but I always loved the juxtaposition. This weasley little shit in a newsboy hat with a dude who’s supposed to be nuclear. And with a dude who’s a naked hairy giant. And with a Ugandan savage. Wippleman was great.

Shawn and Jose Lothario. I get the history and connection, but Shawn coming out doing his whole shtick and Jose walking behind him all old and such. Just looks kinda cringey and shit. Jose looked like Shawn's pimp.

Paul Heyman and Curtis Axel. It wasn't the best to start off with, but after that Triple H promo, poor Axel didn't stand a chance. also Paul Heyman and Cesaro. Cesaor did fit with The Real Americans. But Cesaro is posh, educated, a man of class. Nothing alike with the Sleazy, Underhanded and violence advocator that is Heyman. Fact that he played third fiddle to Lesnar didn't help too. Heyman has said that the only reason they even put him with Cesaro was so Heyman could go out every week and remind people that Brock ended the streak. He said that people always criticize WWE for doing stuff and forgetting about it. He said this was WWE's way of constantly reminding people about Brock without him having to be there. Count me in as one of the people that was really hoping that this was going to lead to something for Cesaro though.

Yeah, it was a golden setup for a future Brock/Cesaro match that would have put Cesaro over huge even if he lost. And then it led to exactly nothing.

Blassie managing Shiek and Volkoff. Blassie wore the head dress to sort of fit in but that left Volkoff as the odd man out. Can somebody please explain how this Trio even came to be? I know January 84 Shiek loses the world title to Hogan. Next thing I know Wrestlemania 1 in March of 85 Shiek is now tag team champions with Volkoff, and Blassie is their manager. What was the reason Shiek fell into a tag team so quickly? Simply because, evil foreigners? To make all this even more weird, this Trio transitioned into Slick managing the Bolsheviks! Once Shiek replaced Zhukov and Slick replaced Blassie. Both Sheik and Volkoff had been managed by Blassie going back to 1979: www.youtube.com/watch?v=07JDcNjNizcWhile I'm not aware of Blassie adopting the head dress prior to Sheik's return in 1983, it wasn't something he wore all time, but did show up with some frequency as Vince encouraged his roster to be characters.

The trope of "conniving businessman in a fancy suit managing shouty cocaine-fueled post-apocalyptic warrior" makes no sense and shouldn't have worked for anyone, but it was such a staple of 80s and early 90s wrestling that it just feels right to me, and I love seeing modern tributes to it.
