I mean, if they really want to subvert expectation, they have Roman lose before 1000 days.
At this point, that's the only f***ing shocker they have left.

I mean, what’s Hogan supposed to do if he just beats the Iron Sheik? Become the biggest star of all time? Get real, marks!
Yeah, you guys remember when Vince beat Austin and Stone Cold came out on RAW the next night to say he was the better man?

"That's the business at its very best. That's promotion at its very best. That's storytelling at its very best. That's what you want. You want the challenger to come out a bigger star than he would've been if he won the championship, because then where do you go from there? What's the story to tell? Now you know the story. It's Cody's redemption. He's coming back from what was just taken from him, from the defeat that he suffered that he didn't deserve to have to have inflicted on him." "You hope this is the one. You think this is the one. You're sure this is the one. You watch the match happening and you go 'You know this is the one,' and then it turns out not to be the one. And you go 'Oh, man — I can't wait to see the next chapter.'" I feel like WWE/Heyman/everyone involved doesn't remember that this shit was DULL and dead in the water before Sami showed up and they got lucky They had a moment with McIntyre, they lost it, and now Drew might be leaving the company he's been damaged so hard from singing in front of his home country after losing Then Sami came along, gave the Bloodline a different flavor, had a hugely successful heat moment at the Rumble, then Sami lost in Montreal and it sucked but "It's ok Cody's winning" And then not only did Cody lose, he lost the EXACT SAME WAY Drew did, and neither Drew or Cody sold it, they were just like "Oh well ho hum Roman was the better man" when that's not true! Like why when Cody said "I had you" he doesn't recognize the giant Uso in the room? That makes him look like shit alone, not even factoring in hos he lost and then the super heat beatdown he got to end the night It is dull, it's the same shit, and they want to justify keeping it going while ignoring the big caveat that people don't want to see the Bloodline keep succeeding, they want to see them LOSE, that's why Night 1 was a triumph and Night 2 undid it all and it was a return to the bullshit reality that WWE can't escape, made only worse with the realization that Vince is back Alvarez said it was like the ending of Dallas where Bobby stepped out of the shower and the whole last season turned out to be a dream... the last like 5-6 months of promise and hope? All a dream, and we're just... back to this lol Cody definitely did reference Solo cheating in order to get Roman the win. And that’s also why he said he was the “better competitor” and not the “better man”

Given how much of ECW booking was just misery porn I buy that he genuinely believes this.

Doable then, though with Money in the Bank the next weekend, it's not going to happen I just realized that May 27th is King/Queen of the Ring in Saudi. So, SD might be pre-recorded that week. Do they dare do it there? Unlikely. Very unlikely. But possible.

Here's another potential answer to the question of, "And then what?" If you'd had Finn win and had Gunther drop the Intercontinental title without being pinned then you'd have two prominent heels with a lot of momentum behind them coming out of Mania right there.

Nah, they made a mistake. But they stick true to that mantra “The Guy”. Roman’s undoubtedly a success. So..business wise, you can’t blame them.
As for not taking a risk (?) on a new huge star (which hypothetically could lead to even more financial success long-term), you can absolutely blame them.
Cap, as the kids say.

Everyone was mad that Cody lost myself included. But then I realized that Cody's story is exactly like his dad's story in NWA. Dusty wanted to win the World Title from Ric Flair but The 4 Horsemen always stopped it from happening. Eventually Dusty won. So I think that's where this is going. Also, Roman is 50 days away from being Champion for 1000 Days, so I think they want him to get there & then he will lose the title. And now, Brock taking Cody out is another barrier for him to get over before getting to his goal. Except that Dusty had the book, Dusty was a big star in Florida & Georgia by the time Flair got to the Carolina's & Dusty never needed to be the long term champion because he's done it already by the time of the Horseman. I don't think a short Bash 86 run would benefit Cody. Note: Typed before I read the post on this page about not having watched Crockett TV. Dusty was not loved in the Carolinas. He was a Florida guy, so he was trying to do everything in his power to get sympathy to make it so people's got no choice but to root for him. Except, we are no longer in the territories era and whenever a guy loses his big opportunity, he very rarely, if ever, gets a second chance.

Yup you watch ECW docs and they always cream themselves over how Tommy never won and when he finally did he immediately got beat down by then next big heel. Always send the fans home miserable was these peoples motto and they're the same folks defending this shit.

Cody's been consistently outselling merch and been on the house shows with the most growth by comparison. So even from a business perspective it doesn't make sense.

What does he do Paul? He steals Hardcore Holly's booking idea and beats everyone. But really, an unhinged Roman Reigns attacks Cody the next night on Raw and demands a rematch. Next show, Cody says that Roman's been in every world title match for three years and he wants to give new people a shot instead of giving Roman shot after shot. Roman says he doesn't need shots, just one shot. He says if Cody agrees to face him at Backlash for the title and he loses, then Roman will not be able to challenge for the title while Cody is champ. Have them fight in some gimmick match and Cody wins. Then, people know Roman won't be involved in the world title scene and he can focus on finishing the Bloodline story while Cody feuds with Gunther who drops the IC title at Backlash to Sheamus or Drew. How about that Paul?

It was genuinely really good but also infuriating (and it died because Paul Heyman is a scumbag and a liar and a embarassingly bad businessmanrather than his depressing af booking.)
