Sorry Brooks, finding out from you whether it'd be worth spending a Friday night watching this crap was always appreciated. ... I genuinely don't get the reference, help me out here. The gentleman cited in a few Smackdown spoiler threads on here from nearly a decade ago who helpfully pointed out how badly the product failed to live up to '80s NWA, and became a recurring meme for a bit.

We've really reached peak "the guy who posts the editorialized Smackdown tapings spoilers and digresses to talk about how he cheered for all the heels and booed all the faces except CM Punk, and then Randy Orton noticed him and was deliberately 'messing' with him all through the show" level. Well, know your audience, I guess. And with that post, you have reached peak 'I'm not an Internet fan despite posting on a niche forums niche offshoot for a decade plus'... Sorry Brooks, finding out from you whether it'd be worth spending a Friday night watching this crap was always appreciated.

I was really excited when Matt arrived in AEW, I was always more of a Matt fan than a Jeff fan, so the fact he came alone didn't bother me at all. But it has to be said that since he arrived nothing has really stuck and adding Jeff into the mix beyond the nostalgia pops hasn't helped a bit. As sad as it is to say, but maybe time has just caught up with them and it's time to pass on the torch and hang those boots up. Back when the Broken gimmick started in TNA it seemed like great a way for Matt to transition out of the sort of conventional matches that his body is too beaten-up to really do effectively anymore, and into a role where he could bank off his immense charisma. Every Hardy Boyz reunion since then's just highlighted all of his (and Jeff's) growing limitations.

Punk/Danielson/Omega/Jericho/Tanahashi/Okada/Naito/Ibushi That's the thing; unless AEW or wrestling in general suddenly explodes in popularity again, none of those guys are going to be "headlining a 70k+ attendance supershow" draws unless they're opposite an even bigger draw. They're going to need a top name from the last boom period or a major current mainstream celebrity. Preferably a few from both categories. I can think of one WWE Hall of Famer with some mainstream recognition who's already made bank off the Khans before who could pull it off, even right now, but discussing him on here runs afoul of forum rules.

With the right celebrities and nostalgia acts, maybe. Even then, they'll probably still need several more years of building up brand recognition first.

I consider him the first headliner to come up after the "the WWE brand is the real star" mentality really solidified. Cena was on top when that concept started taking hold, but Cena felt like the last guy who managed to scoot in while the door was closing, who got to work with the credible stars from the boom period before they became nostalgia acts and who still had the opportunity to refine and tweak his own persona based on actual crowd feedback.
Roman ticks off all the boxes for what WWE wants in their headliner and does it all competently, but he could be replaced by any of a number of other talents on their roster who tick the same boxes just as effectively, and it wouldn't significantly impact viewership or profits. That isn't even a criticism of Roman or saying he doesn't have the indefinable "It factor," it's saying that even if he does he will never, ever be positioned in a way where he can demonstrate it, by design.
The last guy who came through the WWE machine and actually managed to get over as a distinct personality despite their best efforts was Bray Wyatt, and they rewarded him by firing him and trying to foist his gimmick onto somebody else.

If people are losing their shit over Cody coming back to WWE, can you imagine the meltdown both sides are going to have when Cody takes his first loss?! I mean, that's gotta make everybody happy, right? WWE stans can say it's proof that being a big name in the little leagues doesn't count for much, AEW stans can say it serves him right for selling out.

Putting on a good match or a good segment or making guys look their best to build to future money matches will never be a priority if doing so would imply that Ted Turner's cock isn't smaller than Vince's.

He said Triple H is his favorite wrestler of all time so I guess that makes a lot of sense. Cody built the single biggest threat to WWE's monopoly on pro wrestling since WCW and did it all to get Senpai Sledgehammer to notice him. This is the best comedy angle of all time.

I absolutely want to believe Cody showed up at the arena this morning and it was the first time Vince ever saw the tattoo and he was all "Damn, that is one bitching tattoo, pal" and was raving about it to the point where even Cody was utterly dumbfounded at meeting somebody else who actually likes his awful neck tattoo and then Vince demanded the video crew use the tattoo logo as Cody's big entrance graphic and build his entire image around it.
