Also late to the party. My thoughts on the manner could lead to my banning, therefore I will just say the folowing. Abstinence and its many accessories: bad. I don't see how it's bad. Like I said earlier(and even though I don't exist),I'm abstinent and I don't see how there is anything wrong with it. I'm also not saying if you're not abstinent, you're a bad person. To each their own. Obviously,I don't want you to get banned since you think you would if you said something so I'm not expecting a response. I just had to state that I don't think it's a bad thing to be abstinent. I think the stress of the post was on the "its many accessories" part. Choosing not to have sex is not a bad thing. But making a poorly informed decision, or an uneducated one (do me up the butt without a condom then i'll blow you), or one into which you've been pressured (parental, religious, etc.), or make the choice out of a phobia (social, sexual, self image, whatever) rather than rational decision...that kind of stuff.

It's a mixed thing. One one hand the fact that people want to wait is cool On the other, it is a little flaunty

I think it goes along the lines of the one protest sign that says (I think) "Bombing for peace is like f***ing for virginity."

I have no problem with anyone wanting to wait. I find in commendable, even if it's not my cup of tea. I DO, however hold a a slight issue with people wearing a damn ring as if to say "Look at me! I'm a virgin!" It's a personal stance. Keep it that way, please.

I find it funny how a board full of people that will rant against anything suggesting a PC culture and against people being too touchy will have so many have such a personal problem with someone perhaps making a different life decision then they would and wearing something to signify it.
It's like this..if society did not ridicule and mock abstinence and virginity (especially the peers of these young women) then they probably wouldn;t feel the need to "go against the grain" by signifying their decision. As it turns out whenever a group of people do anything that people have a negative opinion of they will likely do what every other counter society movement does and wear it on their sleeve.
If you don't want to wear one then good on you..but if you have THAT big a problem with someone else doing so you're as judgemental and picky as people proclaim these women to be.
It's a bracelet, let it go.

For some reason, I don't see many guys wearing them.
Like was said before, both Britney and Christina Aguilera claimed to be saving themselves for marriage, and we all saw how that went. Public figures doing it to bring awareness to the issue is no different to me than bringing attention to AIDS research or the hoax that is global warming. Just remember to walk the walk that you're talking.

I'm going to have sex with a purity ring, then sell it.

I think it's like a clatter ring, but instead of declaring you are either in or not in a relationship, it declares you are waiting until you are married. And just like the clatter ring, it helps people considering you romantically know where you stand before they even say hello. And Kudos to anyone who wants to save themselves for marriage. In these times, I can think think of many things that are harder, less "cool," or more frustrating. If you want to do it and actually make it, then that's something no one can take away from you.

I don't see the harm.
Now, if the ring really is supposed to be a "symbol" that the person is more pure than I am, I'll wait for them to say something stupid to me before I pass judgment.

The ring itself and the meaning behind them I have no issue with. I just don't see the point of advertising your abstinence or no-sex vows like that. I'm a virgin and I don't need a ring to let the world know about it.

I don't see the point in them. OK, you don't want to have sex before marriage. That's cool. Why wear a ring though, unless your trying to show it off or provoke some sort of reaction. Just seems like a real dick thing today, like your using the pure ideals and making it to promote yourself. Pointless iyam...

I don't care whether or not you're saving yourself, it's a personal choice. But I haven't met or seen anyone who wears a purity ring that isn't a dick about it. Ergo, if I have to respect you advertising your choice with a purity ring, you have to respect me telling the world about my choice with my "I ON THE FIRST DATE" ring.

Bah, they're just like any other "spiritual" accesory. Wearing one grants you nothing. (outside of appearing to the world that you're one of these people) There's still ring bearers that screw people and non-promiscuous folk that don't feel the need to advertise too. It's basically like saying "look at me, I require extra attention for doing what I should." They're tools, but at least their heart is in the right place. (or is that their netherregions not in the wrong place?)

I'm all for abstinence. At least with teenagers. They're not ready for it. Because they're morons. So, I'm happy for schools to promote it. But, they definitely need to include a MAJOR set of lessons on condoms and other means of birth control. Because, again, teenagers are morons. EDIT: No offense to the teenage posters here.

I always thought of my sexual status as my own business and not something to share with the world. Plus, I think having something like a purity ring makes people want you to be or become a hypocrit just so everyone can say HAHA you're no better than me, you let your urges overcome you too. Like the general public sees it sort of like a "I am stronger, I have more will power" symbol more than "this is what I believe is right" symbol. It also makes some parents feel better that little Suzie's favorite band is some good, honest, morally strong boys, instead of rockers humping groupies everynight. whether it's a lie or not.
Oh and purity balls are a little creepy

I have nothing against the idea behind these things (if you want to be a virgin until you're married, ok go for it) but overall I find these things to be really stupid. They're also nice show-off pieces..oh look at me, I'm PURE. Big deal.
I'd also apply this to all stuff like this, not just Purity Rings. Purity contracts are really stupid too.
