I was just reading an article in a magazine about Jordin Sparks and how she wears a purity ring (meaning she won't have sex until she's married.) I didn't really know what to think; one part of me likes the idea of a woman not being a slut, but is it realistic?

Some roadies and some drink, and you might as well cut off all of the Jonas Brothers' fingers.

I don't mind the idea behind it at all(what people do or don't do in the bedroom is their business), but the actual rings seem like an excuse to try and say that you're better than others, which is lame and a dick move.

Two of my wive's friends wear Purity Rings. One is Divorced and the other had a Miscarriage after she got knocked up in high school years ago.
So you can guess my opinion of so called "Purity Rings".

I'm fine with it. Anyone who has a problem with people wanting to wait is a jerk.

one part of me likes the idea of a woman not being a slut, but is it realistic? You have a fresh sound. That will play well around here. As for the actual topic, if someone intends to live up to the promise of wearing the ring then I really have nothing to say against it; however, I'm sure there will be plenty of times, just like with ANYTHING, where this Purity Ring idea won't be 100% as honest as its principle.

Why does she gotta wear a ring to prove she ain't a ho? Why does she have to show it off like that?
I'm not disrespecting the idea of waiting until marriage. It's your body, you do what you want with it.
But something just bugs me about people showing off the fact that they wait, as if it's a slap in the face to those who lose their virginity consensually before marriage.

I'd wear one if I didn't have any shame to admit I am a virgin.
Not that I'm saying people who wear one have shame about it, just that I have no problem admitting to it in a generation obsessed with sex.

If that's what they wanna do, by all means, it's not my business. Kudos to you if you wanna wait.

See, for the right reasons I don't think its showing off, anymore then wearing a cross necklace or a wedding ring. Its just something to symbolize how you feel. I think its like me wearing my ghostbusters hat; I support ghostbusters, but I'm not trying to show off to a non-Harold Ramis fan.

I can definatly see this view too. I mean, I have no problem with people drinking around me or smoking around me so I wouldn't wear something saying I don't do either. I just tell people I don't. If people genuinly want to have sexual intercourse before marriage, that's fine. I wouldn't judge them in the same way I wouldn't want anyone judging me on my decisions unless there was a major reason for it.

Most of the people I've seen who have them DO bring it up and show them off, though. I know thats probably just a small part of those who wear them, but it only takes a small fraction to sour you on something

Difference is that she is a public figure and a potential role model. Making that public declaration is a good thing. As far as non-celebrities go, it could save the kid some frustration and heartbreak. How many girls did you know was with a guy whose main goal was to get some? If the guy knows that it is not going to happen from the get-go, he might leave her alone, which could save her from investing herself in a guy that is not right for her.

Sex and virginity being some kind of special gift is f***in' goofy.

I'm fine with it. Anyone who has a problem with people wanting to wait is a jerk. Yeah..I have NO problem with someone saying "this is a representation of MY moral decision." The only time I have any issue with individual morals is when people try to force others to live that way as well.

A stupid fad?
An annoying way to get attention AND to attract guys?
About the whole "sex before marriage" thing, I'll just say: do whatever you want, and don't annoy me if I want it one way or the other.
Oh, and I just find it hypocritical when girls proclaim they are virgins, sparing themselves for their first night of marriage, and then are well-known for their mouth-and-hand skills. Not to mention those who have the front door locked, but a very accessible backdoor.

I don't have a problem with a young person who chooses to wear a purity ring. What I do have a problem with is parents and schools who choose to preach abstinence without advising the kids about birth control and especially STDs. To assume that most adolescents are going to abstain at a time in their lives that horniness is at its highest is to assume failure.
