Re: Badass It's far worst than Dracula and some 1930s movies. Vampires and werewolves were once feared to be real. It wasn't just knavish plesants, Thomas Aquinas, the best mind of his generation, and several others, the man who married Christian Theology and classical philosophy into one body of thought that plowed the ground for the Rennisance, thought they were real. The Beast of Gévaudan killed over a hundred people and was the terror of France. Vampires were the sons of the devil and were the terror of the night, they were confused for plauge. Now, they are little more than day dreams for school girls. Monsters should remain monsterous.

Monsters can still be monstrous.
People seem to over-look this, but vampires have been symbols for cereal (Count Chocula) and children's learning (the Count from Sesame Street) for quite some time. And yet, I doubt anyone would say that their existence somehow dilutes how scary vampires can be when someone makes a book or movie that emphasizes such a point. So, really, do the sparkling vampires of Twilight really present such a problem? Sure, they're silly and they don't exactly match up with more typical vampire lore... but scary vampires can still be presented if a writer/director wants to do so. So, what's the harm?

The Beast of Gévaudan killed over a hundred people and was the terror of France. Yeah, but that was a lion.

Eh, unless ya get a cut of the box office receipts, who cares what's on top $ wise.
Though anyone who didn't see New Moon making money hand over fist wasn't paying attention, they've marketed the hell outta the thing--books, movies and all. And boy has it worked.

I saw it... I partially liked it. Violently hated the rest of it.

Haven't seen it, never seen the first one. Am reading the first book outta morbid curiousity/going by my belief you have to actually read/see something before judging it.
Thus far not really enjoying it, but I understand I'm not really the audience for it anyway.

Considering the new movie coming out, Transylmania, this might not be the worst thing to happen to vampires.....

Normally I would agree. But.... Glittery vampires doing a bad emo act, coupled with one of the worse ratings of the year on all the movie review sites? C'mon..... Most of us watch/watched a television show where 1/2 naked oiled up men pretend to fight. And its not very well liked by a lot of the general public. Except, no matter who you are, there's a chance you were, are, or will be a wrestling fan at some point. Twilight ain't nothing like that homie.

I think his point that you can marginalize and trivialize anything in simplistic terms to make it sound stupid is valid though.

You wouldn't believe how much babysitting money there is to be thrown around. Especially from the girls "babysitting" at MY house...

140 MILLION in one week?! That's more then Lost Boys and Near Dark in their entire runs put together! *Weeps in a corner* I have a huge freaking problem of young women cutting themselves and running up to Robert Patterson in the middle of street to ask him to suck her blood (While he annoyed me at first, I have full respect for him just putting up with this nonsense). How did THIS get no-sold? I genuinely feel sorry for the poor guy after all of the crazy stories I read about him.

Eh, I don't much care how much money it made, but, like I've said, I'm just annoyed at how many of my students (ages 6-11) will likely have seen it over the weekend...like I've said so many times before, I don't care much about the "OMG sparkly vampires NOOOO" thing, but I do care about so many young women embracing a story with a pretty negative message running through it.
...And for those who'll argue "but they're not the target audience!", that doesn't help explain why they all own kids-sized t-shirts with the logo or with Pattinson's face on them.

That's valid as well, but that's the fault of the parents moreso than the franchise itself.
