Um, no. Austin's edginess was him flipping the middle finger, swearing in promos, and drinking beer. That stuff is absolutely not going to happen in modern day WWE, aside from some mild swearing. I suppose they'll let Austin drink beer when he comes out but that's about the extent of it. Austin is far from the only example, I only used him because he's often the first person to come to mind whenever someone wants an example of a badass. Undertaker, Orton, and Sheamus have all come off as "edgy" characters whenever they need to, and they have all shown the ability to manage it without needing to swear all the time or drop obscure references, so that's not really an excuse. If CM Punk can't come off as "edgy" without needing to drop insider references or "shoot" on something then that's more a problem with him than anyone else. Maybe WWE should stop pushing him as if he were a badass, because as it stands, all I really think of him as is a face version of The Miz, except much more competent when it comes to the ring.

Well that's where our disagreement comes to a stalemate I suppose, because I don't think any of those 3 you just named have ever been edgy. Well, maybe when Taker was a satanist in 1999 but that's about it. IMO, Punk is more of an edgy character than either Orton or Sheamus have ever been.

I think Undertaker chokeslamming Edge through a ring and then burning him alive, Sheamus looking a rampaging Mark Henry (who had been destroying everyone in his path) in the eye and going, "I'll fight him", and Randy Orton going absolutely insane on Christian are all a lot more "edgy" than anything CM Punk ever did, but yeah, difference of opinion and all. It's not like "edgy" is a very strictly defined term, anyway.

The last time I really was into CM Punk was on ECW during the whole Originals/New Breed stuff.

Orton was pretty edgy when he beat the shit out of pretending-to-be-concussed Shawn Michaels at that show in 2007. He did a lot of things around that time that went really far.

I don't think Punk is supposed to be edgy. He's a prick. His whole thing is saying things that people wouldn't touch before (except Triple H when in DX mode). I actually like it.

I still like Punk, and still consider him to be my overall favourite male wrestler. I'm also of the opinion that he deserves the top, main event spot that he has in the company right now.
However? I'm tired of face Punk. So, so tired. Although I never wanted him to turn face in the first place, I didn't mind when it happened, because the whole beginning of all of this was just so damn beautiful. It's just grown stale to me over the past two or three months, though. I think a large part of it is that Punk just makes a ridiculously amazing heel that it almost seems a bit of a waste to have him as a face. I've been rewatching SD episodes from 2010, and seeing crazy villain Jesus Punk is just making me miss him being heel all the more.

Before the original pipebomb, I was always apathetic about Punk. I respected him, but I never liked him or was much of a fan. After that promo, I was flipped. I wanted to get behind him and did. However, since then, it seems that he's been emasculated at least character wise and he comes off as such a whiny bitch. I dont know the guy (obv), but I have grown to like him more as a person than I did prior, at least in how he presents himself on Twitter and such. I also really liked how he went after Chris Brown and find Shawne Merriman's recent tirade against him laughable as those two are pure douches.

He's finally made it to the stop so, predictably, the internet who worshiped him for eons suddenly find reasons to hate him. Shocking.

This thread makes me smile. My post in the other Punk thread will tell you why.
Personally, I'm enjoying Punk more than ever. He's in a much better position now than he was in 2010, so I can take any supposed changes to his character.

It's pretty much a lot of "I love Punk, but I hate faces. Which side wins out?" The odd thing is, and I feel dirty here, I seem to have been one of the ones defending his post-HHH face character a lot, despite NOT being a fan.

I dunno, I think he's a better WWE Champion than almost anyone who's held it since 2004. Keyword "almost."

Honestly, and this isn't a dig at the topic creator, I'm more tired of people complaining about him.

Here's what I don't get, why is it that, as the character evolves into something different from what originally appealed to some people, why aren't those people allowed to change their opinions without it being some kind of "hypocritical" action? This incarnation of CM Punk is different than most previous incarnations, and some people apparently don't like that. Their opinion shifted as the character did, what is the problem with that?

However, speaking for myself, the Edge/Cena feud over the WWE title was pretty much the sole highlight in what was an otherwise dull year.
