Pandering has no connotation to the 'other' fanbase. Punk IS pandering to the typical internet fan. Thats where most of his references are aimed at. That much is undeniable. Children aren't as vocal as adults. Thats the difference. Its 'cooler' for a child to like a more adult oriented thing than the other way around. Ok, now he's pandering to the typical internet fan, instead of adults? That sounds even more ridiculous. When's the last time he even used an insider reference, during his feud with HHH? Whenever he's onscreen with Laurinitis by referencing his relationship with Animal and calling him 'vanilla'. He makes insider references to pander towards the crowds. He's doing exactly what WWE has always done with their main eventers by having them appeal to a certain audience.

He's doing exactly what WWE has always done with their main eventers by having them appeal to a certain audience. That was like months ago. You act like he does that on a weekly basis, and that it's his entire character. His character is more adult-like to Cena's, but he isn't solely targeting them, or else the other fans would end up feeling isolated. And how do other main eventers appeal to certain audiences? Does Sheamus pander to gingers? Does Randy Orton pander to psychos? HHH to men in business suits? No, they all try and get cheered by a majority of the audience on a regular basis. Anyway this whole discussion's pointless. You can't say someone's pandering to adults because not all adults have the same opinions on what's entertaining to them. And you certainly can't pander to the IWC, as it's full of people with varying ages and genders. All with vastly differing opinions.

What I wanna know is, why is "pandering" a dirty word anyway? It's more or less part of the essence of wrestling.
And frankly, I don't see how having two top faces (Punk and Cena in this case) that specifically target adults and kids respectively is so much worse than having a face that might appeal to both. Both approaches work, as you can't say either guy isn't over.

Sure he gets more reactions than pretty much anyone, but I'm pretty sure his character wasn't meant to get boos from half the audience. The WWE's just now deciding to go with it instead of fighting a losing battle in trying to get everyone on his side, but I'm sure they'd rather have everyone cheering Cena.

I'm not saying it is. I'm just saying that's exactly what they're doing with Punk. I find the character dull and more than a bit grating at times but I can see why they'd go for it and if it succeeds, all the better for them.
The Monday before Elimination Chamber as I recall. His 'anti-corporate rebel' schtick is geared towards the adults and the wrestling aspects are geared towards smarks. If there's crossover appeal, so much the better but the WWE creates their characters with key markets in mind.
Well Sheamus is one for the Europeans and Irish in particular to appeal to that audience. Orton was basically the number one chap for pandering to the adult market with his badass character before Punk came along. And Triple H with his DX schtick pandered towards the teenagers/kids although his much reduced role now just allows him to go for the adults once more.
You could say the same with kids but just look at Cena's character. Kids have different opinions but he's made to pander towards them. Same with Sammartino, Hogan and practically every other main eventer. Find an audience they can appeal to and market towards them for the best profit.
