I honestly just don't get this. I mean literally. I don't understand how people conflate "taking it seriously" with "not smirking or laughing." The logical connection between these two statements utterly eludes me.

I just got to see this, and I was really amped when The Rock came out initially because Cena's empty arena promo was really great, and I thought it was going to be the intense moment that I was left wanting last week. It was just so awkward to watch him smile like a little girl while The Rock is threatening him. It took me out of the moment completely.

It was just incongruous with his prior serious statements about 'having to win' and 'having nothing else'.
It would be one thing if Rock was telling his lame insults, but he wasn't.
He was serious and Cena should have been as well.

It's, gosh, like his character is doing it deliberately or something. As if he doesn't take Rock's cheeseball insults very seriously even if he takes the event seriously.
Perhaps if Rock had actually torn into him with something new, it might've had an effect. Your merch sucks! You dress funny! What?
Those wanting to see them make angry faces at each other, well, you're gonna be in luck but with weeks to fill they haven't done it yet. Next week's musical battle may lead to it, or they may wait another week or so.
If WM was this weekend, it'd be a different story, I'm totally certain of that. Things are being brought to a boil, don't ram the heat up now then be left with nothing to do for the rest of the month but snarl in each others faces.

To be fair, Rock's threats were so laughable, Cena HAD to smile. Exactly. How can you take "Kung Pao Bitch", "Fruity Pebbles", and "Ladyparts" seriously. Rock was being idiotic. Cena being serious then would have been stupid.

Cena being serious then would have been stupid. Except I don't think Rock called Cena any of those things when he went out to talk to him that night. What was so funny to Cena at that moment? Also I think Cena is the last person to be laughing at someone for using cheesy insults.

This feud just seems entirely backwards right now.
It needs a Jericho-esque "NOOOOOOOOOO! THIS IS NOT A JOKE! I AM NOT A JOKE! AND YOU WILL _NOT_ LOOK PAST ME, YOU STUPID SON OF A BITCH!" moment.
Only problem is, Cena has already got the better of Rock on the mic the past couple outings, and so WWE has shifted the burden of having something to prove on The Rock.
It might be time to have Cena bring that up, too. No more "I'm here and you're not." crap. Time for Cena to get arrogant and flat out tell Rock that Rock knows he can't beat Cena. Rock thought he was going to come back and just have a little bit of fun with the fans, and he's not taking Cena seriously. Say that he's trying to cover up that he's insecure that he can't still go like he used to.
Drag something more out of the Rock than "I am going to rip your throat out".
Right now, it just looks like Cena flailing about because of insecurities about his appeal to the fanbase, and Rock flailing about because of insecurities about his ability to perform in-ring.

what annoys me about it is the same thing that annoys me about Triple H's constant "insider" jokes. it makes it look like he doesn't care. why should I get invested in a guy whose never bothered by anything? seriously, at this point I get the sense that his opponent could brutally murder his entire family with a chainsaw and he'd still laugh about it like it was no big deal. he should at least take a serious feud seriously. it's one thing to brush off a goofball like Santino, it's another thing to brush of Kane, for example, the same way.

He was direct and in his face being serious but Cena goofed off plain & simple.

It's been my experience that if two guys are squaring off, its the one not smiling that's about to get KNTFO.
Cena's shit eating grin is probably the biggest insult to the Rock he can pull off and the fact that it gets so many Rock fans riled means its working perfectly.

People can't dislike something without someone else demanding that in actuality they're being worked? Like everyone else is too stupid to know the difference, and you need to set them all straight on what's really going on.

I don't really want to read this whole thread. But my stance on it is that by smiling, Cena is undermining the importance of this feud. Both guys are supposed to be at a point where neither can stand the other. Cena blowing off Rock's insults is a problem because it's hurting one of the Rock's biggest attributes in that he's a big shit talker.
Imagine if Hogan had chuckled and shrugged when Andre ripped off his cross. It would have completely lost it's impact. I don't really care how "real" it is, it's not entertaining, it's annoying.

I'm just wondering why now all of the sudden it's acceptable for him to do it among the majority, but when he did it to everyone else, the majority bitched and moaned about it to no end.

It's supposed to be a real feud. Rock stopped the cheesy insults tonight and go into his face and then Rock said he'd rip his throat out. Rock's very serious here. Cena goes and cuts a promo earlier on in an empty arena very serious as well however for some reason even when Rock is serious....Cena is smirking in his face? Like it's all a funny thing? This isn't serious Cena. Cena isn't take The Rock seriously when he was in the promo earlier, it doesn't add up.
It completely takes you out of the moment. The moment that happened Monday that's when the feud jumped the shark a bit for me. The feud has been weird these past few weeks but that's just another notch that makes the long list more annoying.

The logical connection between these two statements utterly eludes me. Tell me you're joking. It's not tricky a concept to grasp. Not at all. I get the opposite, in that if someone is not smirking or laughing they are also not treating it as a joke, I just don't think the situation stays logically coherent if you reverse the two connected conditions.
