I didn't see it as having "disdain" for Iron Man, it was more like "lol gotcha, nerds" which isn't a good attitude to have when you're making a comic book movie. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}And the whole "he's a silly character with magical rings." It's a comic book movie and Iron Man's already hung out with a god and fought a giant alien army.

{Spoiler}That or we might not have seen the true Mandarin yet. {Spoiler}That's my take on it. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Mandarin could be considered an Osama Bin Laden archetype (it's already been established the Ten Rings are an Al-Qaeda-like group). Many terrible things done by his orders, many terrible things done in his name, but unlike Osama, there's no face to put to the name.
Now, is it too much of a stretch to consider that Killian merely put a face on The Mandarin to lend more credibility to his plan? After all, his plan was as much about misdirection as anything else.
Iron Man 4 rolls around and The Mandarin finally comes out of the shadows.

Iron Man 4 rolls around and The Mandarin finally comes out of the shadows. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}I'd buy that. If you consider the idea of "misdirection", even Killian could've been an act of misdirection. I don't know if it was ever established whether Killian was the leader of the Ten Rings or not, but if the plan was to kidnap the president, would they really want their leader exposed that way? If the actor they had to portray the Mandarin wasn't the leader, someone had to be.

It's at over half a billion worldwide after a week, posted the second biggest opening in the US ever and has a solid A from CinemaScore. Do you really think when they're planning a movie of this magnitude, they're sitting around thinking "Hey, ya know what would REALLY piss off the miniscule fraction of our worldwide audience that's familiar with The Mandarin's backstory.."? This "disdain" comic fans are attributing to Black is really akin to people going on the WWE Forum and thinking Vince McMahon is reading the topics to see how to piss off the hardcore wrestling fans. At this point, they simply don't need hardcore comic fans to make these movies massive successes any more and clearly feel emboldened to take more "risks" with the source material. They took a risk with Iron man 3 that's despised by hardcore fans but seems to be enjoyed immensely by the rest of the audience. That's probably going to continue for here on out.

I understand that comic fans are the minority, but {Spoiler}{Spoiler}to hype up The Mandarin, cast an awesome actor like Ben Kingsley, all for a gag seems like a retarded idea. That's not the only reason I disliked the movie though, it coulda been saved despite the mandarin troll, if it was actually exciting and action packed. It was basically Robert Downey Jr doing his schtick for 2 hours then a bunch of Iron Men show up and crash into things. I actually think the "hulk-like Iron Man" from the trailer doing absolutely nothing was more of a let down than the Mandarin.

^^^ Agreed As much as I hated it wasn't JUST down to the twist. {Spoiler}{Spoiler}My friend (Who knows jack about comics) also hated the twist because it was a waste of a good build up to a potentially good villain (I also thought he was well done til the twist).

I saw it yesterday. Not as good as the first, but I enjoyed it more than the second. Having avoided spoilers from friends and message boards, I was completely shocked by the twist. I have mixed feelings on it. On one hand... {Spoiler}we do get the Mandarin, but it's not the guy who looks the traditional Mandarin. On the other... {Spoiler}there could very well be a true Mandarin who has yet to be seen.

Not all hardcore fans hated the twist. I love comics Mandarin and thought this was clever and interesting.

Honestly, I like the regular comics Mandarin enough, but I think the twist fits the context of the film very well.

While I'm glad they did something other than giving Iron Man another armored villain to fight, I kinda wish they had tweaked things a bit so that the main henchman could have been the Melter. They wouldn't even have needed to call him the Melter, since Bruno is already such a good henchman name.

I thought it was a waste of a good build and a waste of a possible way to start introducing more alien stuff in to the cinematic universe. {Spoiler} Mandarin's rings aren't magic after all, they are just some alien tech Mandarin managed to engineer to be rings. They could easier have done something with that, instead they wasted anything like that on a joke.
On top of that, they cant really ever use the Mandarin now, Killian revealed he was the Mandarin, and if there was a real one out there, I severely doubt he'd have let someone use his name with no reprisals for so long. It was the sort of thing I'd have expected from Sony or Fox, not Marvel studios.

I don't get this "but there's a possibility for the real Mandarin" thought that's going around. They've already exposed and ruined that character for the masses. Killian IS The Mandarin in this universe now. It would take some clunky writing to introduce the "real" Mandarin now.
Another good point is the rings. They JUST introduced aliens into this universe. They could've easily had The Mandarin steal some of the tech from The Avengers, explain that he used it to develop his rings. I don't see how people are getting behind this bait and switch.

He wasn't in the first two movies (a hero's main baddie usually comes in the first or second movies) and he wasn't in the Avengers cartoon.
Just a thought.

{Spoiler}{Spoiler}To be honest, The Mandarin isn't the coolest villain (though none of Iron Man's villains are) I'd rather they just didn't use him instead of hyping him up as this cool villain just to pull off a lame joke. As if there wasn't enough lame jokes in the movie.
