I'm not a subscriber, but I do listen to the free WO radio shows and Punk not exactly being a ratings draw has been something that has been discussed for weeks. Of course, he is a huge merchandise seller and is over with the live crowds, so I don't think he's in any danger of a massive de-push anytime soon.
As far as ratings go, you could headline every show with Cena, Orton, Kane, Big Show, HHH the Undertaker and probably get pretty good ratings. Unfortunately, relying on them exclusively wont put you in a good position for the future. Putting guys like Punk, Bryan, Ryder and Ziggler in the main events will cause a short-term ratings hit, but the hope is that one or more of those guys will be able to carry the company five years from now.

The person who posted this on LoP and WrestleNewz isn't the most reliable reporter. He even admitted that he made up a story about Victoria having an affair with Chris Benoit a few years ago, amongst other things. So unless someone with a subscription to the 'Observer can verify this, I don't believe it. Daniel Pena posted this? Well there you go. It's bullshit.

Cable ratings are a dying thing. Not alot people watch live TV anymore. With DVR's, YouTube, streaming websites, hulu, and the fact Nielsen only does cable boxes when many people have satellites, it's pointless. Plus CM Punk isn't the most interesting thing right now. John Cena possibly turning heel and Kane with mask on is by far the most interesting thing right now and something that many people wanted to see for years. I honestly would not mind if ratings went away altogether. It's only done damage over the last few years, but from working in TV, I don't see it going away. You think the RIAA can't embrace the future, television makes it look like it invented Twitter. They use the digital domain well enough, but they can't wrap their heads around how to make money off of it, and how to sell it to businesses.

the fact that there isn't any interesting angles on TV at all might be an indicator.

Face the facts people: Punk and Ryder don't bring in good ratings. Hell, some Smackdowns this year have been 2.3 so you have to think that a couple of segments from those shows did better than this main event. That's not a good sign at all.
Hopefully they turn Punk heel again, maybe this will be a catalyst.

Punk brought in monster ratings during the Summer of Punk 2.0. Why was that? Because an interesting storyline was going on. There is almost nothing of note happening now. Outside of actual wrestling, there's nothing to draw people in. There's no dramatic happenings. There's no hook. Ratings are going to be up and down unless there's a serious storyline going on.

Uh, there was no 'monster ratings' then. It was generally the same with maybe a slight jump in the opening and ending of RAW. And that was with not just Punk, but Cena, Vince, and HHH as well having big time closings to every show. And that wasn't sustainable at all.

Meltzer never said anything about WWE being upset with Punk in his update. Whoever wrote this news-bit went into business for himself. Punk is one of the only guys outside of Cena and HHH who move ratings on RAW consistently. (albeit not by a huge, megastar margin). All Meltzer said was that the main event was a disaster ratings-wise. This is hardly indicative of Punk being a failure, since, as mentioned, he moves numbers normally. It's more on WWE for booking the remainder of the participants so horribly, for so long, that the casuals don't see them as stars, regardless of WWE's current fancy. But, hey, things can change with enough tenacity and patience. In 1996, a Steve Austin/Undertaker Main Event drew the worst RAW number ever at that point. And well, things turned out ok in the end. . Sometimes slow & steady wins the race. WWE should just keep pushing until it sticks or sinks. Patience? From Vince and WWE Creative? That's a laugh.

A million people tuned in to see the next development in the drama surrounding CM Punk. Those segments did feature those others, but Punk was the star. He got the most mic time. He had the most to say. He got the loudest reactions. And it wasn't sustainable because the WWE ran the storyline into the ground.

Maybe if they didn't have Punk run everyone down and actually sell some of there top heels as....well, actual threats to him. The guy runs down every heel including the boss whenever he's on camera and they never make the audience believe that anyone is credible or a threat to Punk.

There was a RAW that ended with Cena and Vince threatening to fire him, another one that ended with Vince and HHH getting the company, etc. It was all 4, in various combinations. And it wasn't sustainable because those kinds of bombshell shooting segments would have gotten old. And even then, it was not that big a ratings jump. Thats what most people here were worried about as it was happening. Not that its a big deal anyway.

"Hope"? What? I'd have thought people by now would have faced the likely possibility that WWE doesn't give a **** how the booking looks five years from now or gives one whit about truly grooming stars for the future. They're concerned with getting ratings NOW. They're concerned with moving merchandise NOW. I say with the way they see it, baring some crazy person taking their disintegration gun to the home offices and all their memorabilia, they'll be around and probably making money in five years. So what if the future is looking a little thin? They've got John Cena and Randy Orton, with The Rock making appearances here and there with Steve Austin and Undertaker practically on standby. They'll totally bumble upon some fad they can push as the next wrestling zeitgeist. Who cares about five years from now? Internet geeks, that's who...but be sure to tweet about Zach Ryder and buy tickets to voice how much you hate John Cena... Or that's just the impression I get following these shows...

I don't know where these million people came from, because they don't exist. The rating breakdown shows that the viewer count increased dramatically for the Punk/Cena/Vince segment. One of their segments actually did draw in an additional 1 million viewers.

For a few months there, they did nothing but, book him to get his ass kicked. First it Nash, then Hunter, Awesome Truth and then ADR. Hell, the only one of those he got over on eventually was ADR. Granted that was for the title but, man, for several months there, they did him no favors.

Punk flat out tells people to change the channel when ADR is on. If you're going to get on Cole for crapping on faces, then say something about Punk doing the same to his top heels. He can't exactly go after ADR and Miz like he would Cena and HHH. They're not as bulletproof.
