I think he's likely better at "intense" promos than "cocky" ones. Problem is, WWE mostly want him to cut the latter.

He talks for too long, then rambles, then starts the repeat himself. "I think he's losing his touch" he thinks too fast for his mouth.

I blame the fact that he has to work a rather shitty script and not so much his own abilities.

Ziggler's good at showing embarrassment and intensity, but I actually find his cocky/arrogant stuff harder to buy. There always seems to be some self-consciousness/doubt that prevents me from getting into his bragging promos. Dolph's best moments were pretty much his short, insecure, off-the-cuff quips he was throwing at people on NXT. He doesn't strike me as the long-winded type in general, which is going to hurt him as a main eventer, since WWE pretty much REQUIRES their main eventers to be extremely long-winded. So unless for some reason, Heyman burns Punk to back Ziggler instead, Dolph still has some work to do.

He and Miz are the wrestlers who most seem like they're reciting memorized lines to me every time they speak for longer than a minute on TV.
I know every wrestler has a script they have to follow but those are the two who I always watch and think to myself "you've sat in the back for the past hour trying to remember these lines" when they're on. It never seems natural to me.

He's definitely not bad,but not great either. I'm sure he'll improve when he becomes champion eventually.

Ziggler's okay when he talks, but I'm not really into it when he's in one of those 5+ minute talking segments in the ring with his feud opponent.
He seems very comfortable however, so he'll probably get better (which he already has, he used to be pretty meh, while he's servicable on the mic now).

I'm not seeing his lack of mic skills. He's not the best, but he's good enough for the main event. Exactly plus he'll get better over time anyway

Watching Dolph Ziggler is a overrated bore fest. Mediocre in ring skills, and even the Great Khali cuts better more awe inspiring promos.
Less Ziggler, more Boogeyman...

Wait...what?
Ziggler is one of the best guys in the company on the mic. That was actually the first thing that drew me to him a few years back, before he was at the level of in-ring work he is now.
He's naturally charismatic, quick-witted and able to have a diversity of tones (smarmy, angry, serious), which a lot of guys lack. He does at times sound like he's reciting lines (which is a valid critique of pretty much every guy in the company but Punk and Big Show), but it actually works for his character. He's a sociopathically self-involved scumbag, in the same vein as Dennis Reynolds from Always Sunny In Philadelphia, and that rapid-fire, hyper-verbose manner of speaking fits for a guy who holds himself in such high regard and has such unshakeable confidence.
Really, I don't understand how people can critique Ziggles when guys like Sandow, Bryan, Cody etc. (none of whom have the poise or versatility of Dolph) seem to get regularly praised for their mic work.

I don't think he's the absolute best, but he's far, far from the worst.
Whether he's good enough for the main event based on mic skills, I think he definitely is. I don't see anyone who is not at least his level on the card that is significantly better on the mic. Granted, most of those below haven't got close to enough mic time to make a fairer judgment.

Ziggler is better at being smarmy than serious. If Ziggler ever turned face, I think the "Douchebag Comedy Character" would actually fit him.

Bad mic skills? He's one of the best natural talkers they have. It's only when he has to recite creative's garbage when he sounds bad. Even though he finds a way to sneak a non-sequiter in like "That's not real" on Monday or "You're not even a girl Morrison"

He reminds me of Edge in that his promo skills werent that great when he first really started getting stick time, but improved considerably year by year as he got more of a push. If you go back to when he first debuted the Dolph character, he's improved exponentially.
I think this topic is offbase or premature. If you asked me to list the 10 best promos in the WWE right now, Dolph would be in the 5-7 range, maybe even higher if I took the time to think about it. If you asked me to pick the worst, Id never even consider mentioning his name.

I can't believe people think he sounds forced and scripted - he's actually one of the only people in the company who DOESN'T sound scripted.
EVERYTHING he says sounds natural, he's great on the mic, he really really is.

Ziggler is one of those guys who would really, really benefit from a looser style of promo because he's extremely quick-witted and appealing when he's allowed to be. He's unquestionably great in the ring but it was actually his mic-work on NXT Season 4 that took me from admiring his ability to him being my favorite pro wrestler. EVERYTHING he says sounds natural, he's great on the mic, he really really is. I have to agree with this. People are so accustomed to what traditional promos sound like (Rock, Austin, etc) - which honestly are great for wrestling, but just sound tacky and lame anywhere else. Ziggler talks in a way that makes him sound like he could exist outside of wrestling, not just an over the top yelling and screaming madman.

The fact that you think you could see someone like Ziggler walking around anywhere is a negative against him becoming a megastar.

He does that EXACT same fast talking rambling that The Rock does, except in a more cool headed and collected manner; he would rather straight-up call you a loser and a failure as a human being, rather than string random words together and insinuate that you're some sort of sexual deviant for laughs. SHOW. OFF.
