Just a thought about Punk and His Views

Not the first example of Punk voicing his opinion on this subject matter, and not likely to be the last.


Punk has that innate ability, personally speaking of course, to make me, a fan of his work in the ring, and someone who agrees with many of these kinds of statements he makes in media interviews, almost root for the other guy sometimes, whether it be steroid using baseball players or, god help me, arch-scumbag Chris Brown.

Now, I'm projecting my own opinions here to a certain degree, but I've often found punk rock [for the purposes of this I'm going to lump in straight edge as something of an off-shoot, as it is Punk's case, I realise it's a far deeper subject than that] to be stifling in its didactic manner of placing rules for everything from record sales to lifestyle and beyond [and not all punk rock, but a certain strand], and Punk has long been an egotistical, bullish person as far as his persona goes, and that's his perogative.


All of which is a long-winded manner of getting to my point, that irks me when I read statements like this:

-Eddie Guerrero, one of Punk's heroes, was fired at one point for using drugs, and they in all likelihood contributed greatly to his untimely death. You need only look at Eddie's physical appearence in 2004 to see the unsettling effects of the kinds of drugs many in wrestling have taken.
-Steve Austin, one of Punk's heroes, as we all know, had a well publicised domestic violence incident in the not too distant past.

Is it a double standard, in these instances? Does he just choose to ignore these instances because they don't suit his arguments about steroid use and domestic violence? I'm genuinely curious as to what you lovely FAN people think.

That bothers me no end. Is he equating people who wash dishes with cheating scumbags? I love Punk's work in WWE, but I can say without hesitation that he's quite the elitist prick.

I mean, I don't need wrestlers to be charming, personable people to like their work. Hell, I'm a huge mark for Shawn Michaels and Brock Lesnar, neither being mr. congeniality.

The double standards just seem so blatant with Punk though. Drug users should be kicked out, unless it's a guy whose workrate and charisma I like. Domestic violence is terrible, alright let's shoot this promotional video with me and steve austin.

Yeah, this kinda stuff combined with his bashing of religious people on twitter have sorta soured me on the guy.

Yeah, no doubt he wouldn't tell his friends in high places that they should just quit their respective sports because they do drugs, or that they're terrible people for beating women (which Austin is). Nah, only when it suits you, mate.

Has he bashed religious people specifically, or was that in reference to the guy he told to kill himself because of his opposition to gay marriage?

I only semi keep up with Punk, so just curious.

The irony being that some strands of punk rock and straight edge may as well be a religion with all their strict rules and dogma...

There are days where he just goes on about how religion is terrible and so are the people that believe in it while retweeting stuff from other sources that essentially boils down to "They're dumb. I'm smart. Suck on it."

Dishwashers don't get drug testesd. That's the point he's making. If you want to do drugs get a different job.

As for the point of the thread, I don't see why CM Punk is expected to call out his friends'/professional heroes past transgressions when talking about something going on right now. We don't know how he feels about those things, and by all accounts he's very loyal to his friends, there's zero reason for him to call out Steve Austin or Eddie Guerrero publicly to "have the right" to criticize someone else.

I'm not saying he has to call anyone out, but he wants to fight Chris Brown for hitting his girlfriend, but sees no issue with doing interviews etc with Steve Austin, who assaulted his wife? Seems odd for someone so vehement in his convictions in one case for them to vanish in another.

This is reason number 1 why if I were building a wrestling company, and if given the choice between D-Bry and CM Punk to be the face of the company, I'm taking D-Bry. Punk can really be a prick. I still like the guy for what he does in the ring, but he can be a prick.

I agree with him about Braun for different reasons. I've got no problem with Braun taking steroids (anyone who's read my posts in the MLB threads knows I have no problems with anyone taking PEDs), the problem is when he was caught Braun tried to destroy someone. He said that it would be easy to tamper with the test, and that they were finding out some stuff about the test taker that surprised them. Braun was saying the guy framed him, without coming out and saying it. That's why I loved when Braun got nailed. I do agree with Punk that Braun isn't sorry, he still gets millions, and that apology showed he wasn't sorry. It was the sorriest excuse for an apology that I can remember.

Don't you have friends that have done things or have views you disagree with? That's the thing with friends, you understand them. I guess to your point he can be extremely harsh on people he doesn't know, but I don't see the big deal in that. He's just a curmudgeonly kind of dude that enjoys ranting on things, big deal. I don't think he's a hypocrite for being friends with or looking up to people that have done regrettable things, that's just life.

I mean, domestic violence is either wrong or it isn't. If the premise that it is is strong enough to want to fight someone over it, it should be strong enough not to depend on the party involved.

He called the Pope a Nazi.

- News came out earlier today that Pope Benedict XVI will be resigning at the end of this month. CM Punk re-tweeted a Pope-related comment that had a Nazi reference in it. A WWE fan commented that Punk made a “envelope-pushing tweet for a company employee.” Punk replied to the fan:

“Oh piss off. Pope was a nazi.”
