I also wanted to have a thread at some point about him that wasn't devoted to how buggy 06 and Boom are, or how good or bad his 3D games allegedly are, or the adult fanart and fanfics, or any of the drama or whatever.

I remember my first exposure to the Sonic series: Playing Sonic 3 at a friends house and both of us being frustrated about not being able to beat the bonus stages.

With some exceptions, I will say the franchise has tended to have excellent music.

I really hope Sega gets past whatever stubborness/music issues it has and puts Sonic 3 and Knuckles on IOS. Taxman and Stealth have been 3 for 3 in their Sonic re-releases, and (in my opinion) the best 2D game in the franchise deserves a great modern port.

I have to give Sonic some serious credit for managing to endure with relatively steady popularity even with all the bad and ugly that's come with it.

This is going to sound weird, but I'd take the steady flow of rule 34/weird fanart/etc as a compliment, because it says that people still care enough about the franchise to produce that sort of thing. When you have a franchise where there really isn't much new fandom output in any sense, weird, vanilla, or otherwise, it's not a good sign.

I've been around for the effective deaths of fandoms before, and it's not pretty watching activity die off with a whimper, like when the last fanart on deviantArt is dated 7 years ago, or when you see one or two people poking around desperately trying to keep a forum alive.

Sonic 2 is in my top 3 of favorite games of all time. All of the genesis game are pretty good included Spinball and 3D Blast. There are some decent 3D sonic games like Adventure 2 Battle, Color and Generation and I even like Sonic 4. The only thing I hated is how underrated the Advance series was. Even through SEGA still have a hard time making a good 3D Sonic, the 2D Sonic games they did since the Dreamcast are pretty good and might even rival the Genesis games in quality.

When I went to the Philippines back around the late 90s, I was surprised to find an SNES Sonic title, only to realize it was a pirated game, which was a hack of an SNES Speedy Gonzales game made in South America. I figured it was weird seeing Sonic kick than his usual offense, rescuing Mario? And his enemies were cats and Sylvester? What was I playing?

What was the story? Why is Sonic kicking? Why is he rescuing Mario? Why did Sylvester capture Mario? Why does the background look like the 3rd Impact? So is the story like, after the 3rd Impact happened, Sylvester took over what was left of Earth, and deemed Mario and Sonic threats? I don't know, this was a terrible pirated game. My friend in the Philippines told me he thought they were never Mario, but illegal immigrants disguised as Mario.

I was a Nintendo kid, but I loved the Sonic games far more than I did the Mario ones. They looked gorgeous, sounded amazing, and were heaps of fun.

They jumped the shark for me when they started introducing Sonic into realistic environments with realistic-looking human characters.
