My love of the original Sonic has become weird in recent years. When I first got a PS3, I downloaded Sonic The Hedgehog. Played it until I got to Casino Night, and just listened to the music for an hour. Never finished the game. That has been the trend for the past six years, and will continue until the day I die. Just constantly buying the latest re-release, and playing until I get to Casino Night Zone.
I'm saying that the Casino Night Zone music is one solid jam.

I was a Nintendo kid, but I loved the Sonic games far more than I did the Mario ones. They looked gorgeous, sounded amazing, and were heaps of fun. They jumped the shark for me when they started introducing Sonic into realistic environments with realistic-looking human characters. I'm iffy on the "realistic" phase of Sonic. I didn't mind the Adventure games; Robotnik's a human after all so it's reasonable to think that there's more humans around. Then... Shadow the Hedgehog and especially Sonic 2006 made things pretty weird. Now you've got princesses who are in love with animals, crazy generals with two different eye colors, G.U.N. (ugh, that acronym) being an actual thing with people instead of robots, and kings who infuse the power of a f***ing time god into his daughter. This is when the feeling of "The hell happened here?" creeps in. If they go back to an understated world where the other humans don't really matter and it's still just Eggman that's involved in the plot, I'm completely fine with that. Just no more bestiality, please.

I hate the name Eggman.
He's Dr Robotnik.

Not even a mention of Miles "Tails" Prower? Arguably the best sidekick ever? Cutest thing that ever happened? Better playable character than Sonic? 0 stars, this thread.

While Sonic 2 and 3 are the superior games, the first Sonic the Hedgehog will always remain my favorite. Marble Zone theme has to be in my top 10 video game themes of all time.
Think I'm gonna bust out the Sonic Collection tonight.

Those were some great Genesis games.
That's about the extent of my Sonic appreciation. But those were sweet.

While I do prefer the current Sally design, no fan draws her old school look better than KissTheThunder.

When I went to the Philippines back around the late 90s, I was surprised to find an SNES Sonic title, only to realize it was a pirated game, which was a hack of an SNES Speedy Gonzales game made in South America. I figured it was weird seeing Sonic kick than his usual offense, rescuing Mario? And his enemies were cats and Sylvester? What was I playing? {Spoiler}{Spoiler}! WHOW ! You MADE IT, Awesome ! Now SONIC and MARIO are good friends forever... And NOBODY can separate them. SONIC loves NINTENDO MARIO loves SEGA What was the story? Why is Sonic kicking? Why is he rescuing Mario? Why did Sylvester capture Mario? Why does the background look like the 3rd Impact? So is the story like, after the 3rd Impact happened, Sylvester took over what was left of Earth, and deemed Mario and Sonic threats? I don't know, this was a terrible pirated game. My friend in the Philippines told me he thought they were never Mario, but illegal immigrants disguised as Mario. And why does he scream his own name when you break him out of the cage?

Sonic 3 with Knuckles is one of my top 5 all time favorite games of all time. I get that 06 and boom were really bad, but now I feel like it's the cool thing to hate sonic now and people look for a reason to say how bad it is. The Blue Blur deserves better. ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/sad.png)

Sonic in serious settings has gotten a lot of skepticism since 06 made it look so weird, but I'd prefer for the main series to get back to a more serious plotline. That does NOT mean gritty, just with more of an emotional impact.

I enjoy the series for the most part. The classic stuff on the Genesis like the first three games were all well worth playing. And even some of the 3D Sonic games bad a few bright spots. Not to mention the music is almost always great.
Far from perfect, but definitely a great action platformer series.

While I'm not gonna argue about his 2D games being awesome I think his 3D era gave us some decent games (console wise, His portable stuff is awesome)
- Sonic Adventure - While it's somewhat dated I still find it decent - Sonic Adventure 2 - While not as good as the first it's still good - Sonic Heroes - Not bad - Sonic & The Secret rings - It takes a while to get into but once you do it's fun - Sonic Generations - I really liked it
Sonic 06 is AWFUL from a technical standpoint I still find the story decent (Watch Cygnus destroyer's "Innocent till proven guilty" on it), I think a remaster would help it big time.
The rest I'll grant are bad, They should've stuck with the Generations formula

I think the franchise really began to lose steam in the mid-90s to be honest, and that Sega milked the franchise too fast, too soon. You had Sonic, Sonic 2, Sonic 3, Sonic and Knuckles, Sonic 3D, Sonic Spinball, Sonic CD, and various spinoffs like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Knuckles Chaotix, not to mention the arcade fighting game, all within the span of about 5 years. I respect the series but don't think the gameplay in the 2D titles was all it was cracked up to be; building up momentum and going fast seemed counterproductive to exploring the expansive levels.
I do think the universe and lore is very impressive and the fact that the comic has gone on for as long as it has is a feat in and of itself. However, it seems a reboot might be inevitable as some of the characters like Shadow really don't add to the mythos in a positive way and carry that late 90s angst/edginess with them.

Characters like Shadow and Rouge can work, but need to be tweaked in some way. Moreso Shadow because IMO, he should have stayed dead post SA2. Not for character reasons, but because it fit the story better.
I admit I was more Mario than Sonic, but I can appreciate the Sonic games and do enjoy them. I even enjoyed Heroes when others didn't (I had the GameCube version, heard the PS2 version was buggy).
I do find it interesting that, while not as much as Mario, Sonic can fit into quite a few molds as to how his world works. There's the games, Adventures of, the Comics/SatAm series, X, Boom....basic story of Sonic vs. Robotnik/Eggman, but each with their own takes.
...also, I may be in the minority that likes the Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games series.

With some exceptions, I will say the franchise has tended to have excellent music. Even the craptastics game have great song And a couple of my favourites, from good games. Not to comment Live and learn,Escape the City,Pumpkin Hill. Honestly, there is enough for a full thread

No, the Olympic games are fun. Even though Sonic is my baby, I've never been anti-Mario. I've enjoyed stuff like Super Mario World, Mario 64, SMB3 and Mario Wii almost as much as I have the Hog's games. Were it not for all of Sonic's lore outside of the Sega canon like the Archie series and the ABC show, I might have wound up more of a Mario fan. The Mario Super Show was cute and funny, but it never had episodes like "Ultra Sonic" or "The Void". Those were punches to the guts of kids across the nation, dude.

He's not as cool or as fast as my original character, Sam the Hedgehog, (do not steal) But he's ok.
