Watched the original RoboCop today. It still holds up as a great action movie with some good social commentary.

Jurassic World
It’s really a terrible movie. Is Ron Howard’s daughter wearing a wig?

"THE SNOWMAN" Picked this up because I've heard the reviews that this is the worst of the year and damnit I wanted to see for myself! Yes, it's bad. Mainly it's a bad script. There's plot holes, there's issues of timing that make no sense... {Spoiler}... there's at least three murders that aren't really connected to the Snowman killings that are unsolved by the end of the movie, fer cryin' out loud! Val Kilmer looks like a bad CGI version of himself (and yes, you can tell the voice-over isn't him). JK Simmons acts like a mustache-twirling pervert, and his accent is not good. The other part is that the movie just feels cold and distant... I wasn't drawn in to the action or the captivated by any of the suspense. It just felt like 'it happened' and that was it. Another thing that bugged me was that the main character (yes, Harry Hole) is supposed to be a legend in the department but the actor just looks to young to have been around that long... It looked pretty, though. If you want to see it, borrow it from someone or something. Don't waste good money on it, like I did.

Kong of Skull Island-7/10
Better than the Peter Jackson remake and way way better than King Kong Lives. About equal if not slightly better than the 70s remake. And not even close to as good as the original.

I went to the discount theater Sunday and watched Mary and the Flower Witch. I really liked the movie and I think it's worth check out once it hits a streaming service. I also got a mini reproduction of a Studio Gibli cell with my ticket.

"BUTCHER BAKER NIGHTMARE MAKER" (aka. "Night Warning") Story: Billy is a high school kid with prospects of a basketball scholarship, but his over-protective Aunt Cheryl doesn't want him to leave... so badly that she's willing to do anything to stop him... I think that if John Waters made a slasher movie, it would play out a lot like this. The center of this movie is Aunt Cheryl, played by Susan Tyrell. She flips from caring and protective to wild-eyed madness at the drop of a pin, and she does so perfectly. Her movie, she tears the screen up. Also, the story is pretty damn good, with not just one but TWO antagonists, with a hard-nosed police detective played by Bo Svenson trying his best to ruin Billy's life as well... Highly recommended to fans of 80's horror flicks, this one deserves to be seen.

Yesterday watched Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (Complete Edition) with my oldest son, and my youngest son joined us for the last half an hour. It's a really good movie if you're a fan of FFVII but if I can offer any advice: avoid the complete edition. I've seen both versions at the added scenes really do nothing other than drag the movie out a lot longer. A lot of them focus on some kid but you'd have to be comatose to not be able to figure out his backstory without them. I seriously wish I owned the "normal" version. It's way better.
But it's still a good movie to see. The last battle is damn good. The whole movie looks great (maybe the complete version has better CGI and rendering but I've never watched the two versions close enough to one another to notice). The callbacks are all good. Vincent is cool. Red XIII only has one line but the voice actor they used for him is so good he became one of my favourite characters in the game. The voice actor for Cait Sith is f***ing hilarious and made me enjoy the character now. I watch the English dub of the movie just because I love their voice actors so much. The story is a bit of a mess but it all comes together in the end.
7/10 (not being ironic, the normal edition gets an 8.5/10)
I think my kids liked it. They didn't get up and leave so that says something.

Finally saw Shawshank Redemption. Doesn't really live up to the hype but I'll probably finish it whenever I come across it on TV.

We're watching Transformers: the Last Knight and I almost feel bad for giving Star Wars: the Last Jedi the same score as it in my year-end list last year. They both got 4.5/10's. I'd say the Last Knight is a 2-2.5/10

The last movie I saw in theaters was The Hurricane Heist, which is definitely a cheesy and stupid movie, yet it is so damn entertaining. I found myself laughing at certain scenes and I don't regret paying to watch it, even if it was on discount day. Which then led me to watch Hard Rain, which I also thought was kind of entertaining, despite being rather corny, but it's definitely one to watch if you are bored on a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, or any other day when you have nothing to do.

Pacific Rim: Uprising wasn't anything special but if you come to grips with that you're watching a brainless action movie and nothing more it's fine. I never saw the first one so all the backstory parts were completely lost to me. And a lot of the characters were really annoying to the point where I wanted to see a few get knocked off. There were too many characters too; they crammed a lot into less than two hours and only the character played by John Boyega is in anyway memorable by the end. I never even knew characters names. There was John Boyega, pretty asian girl, annoying teenage girl, Clint Eastwoods son, guy who looks like Willem Dafoe with tons of make-up and guy I knew was a bad guy from the onset. The robot and monster parts are pretty cool and thankfully a lot more abundant than most monster/robot movies (I'm looking at you Power Rangers). In the end I couldn't give a crap about the whole thing. I applaud them for trying to start a new franchise but I doubt this one will take off.
5/10, but my son gave it 50/10

Watched Fargo for the first time in years the other night, picked up the nice steelbook Shout! put out awhile back. Was surprised to recall that Frances McDormand doesn't show up until more than 30 minutes in and it's only about an hour and a half long. That's making an impact with a role.

We went and saw Blockers tonight. It actually wasn't too bad but it was nothing that will change the world of cinema or even be remembered in six months. The greatest takeaway was that John Cena can carry a movie in a leading role. I've only seen him in cameos, small supporting roles or animated movies. It started slow but once the parents got wind of what was going on and things got stupid it was funny enough. I think I laughed out loud a few times. I found the parents segments way more entertaining than the teenagers parts. But I'm old and I hate teenagers. 7/10

I took my oldest son to see Sherlock Gnomes today. It was not good. A lot of dated references and music. I guess MGM owns the rights to all of Elton Johns music because there was a lot of that in it? The animation and the voice acting were at least good. But the jokes just weren't funny. And I never saw the first one (Gnomeo and Juliet) so I was lost with the story.
Even my son didn't care for it. He said he liked the funny parts but gave the rest a "five or six". I'm not sure if he knows what that means but I could read his body language at the end and could tell he was not enjoying it.
3/10

Just watched the Double Toasted review of "Rampage" (warning: bad language), and I wanted to mention it on the site here because Martin brings up the classic "IT'S STILL REAL TO ME, DAMMIT" meme (at about 26:00 in).

Saw Rampage today. It’s already. It’s kind of like if a cheesy 80’s sci fi movie and a Sy Fy movie of the week had a baby and that baby had a budget.

Finally saw Ferdinand, Thor Ragnarok and Valerian.
Ferdinand: ...McKinnon is really, really good at voice-acting. The end is beautifully done (loved the original Disney animated short of Ferdinand) but I'm kinda frightened I enjoyed Boss Baby as a whole more than this.
Thor Ragnarok: Eh. Seemed fun, I guess. Laughs were good but it's kinda like a fever dream. I don't like how flippant it was at times. Also good lord some of the CG locations gave me Star Wars prequels vibes.
Valerian: dude (director) is such a good visionary, but I feel he's an artist done more favors by having a limited budget and having to rely on real props/costumes than being able To fall back on computer graphics. Leads were terribly miscast but to Dane DeHaans defense, I don't know who you'd ideally cast as that part the WAY the role was written.
