If I love Godzilla, but hated the 2014 movie, will I like this one? I just want monsters throwing down but unfortunately the 2014 was literally 94% boring people I couldn't begin to care about and then fat Godzilla kicking ass in the last 10 minutes. This one has a dumb human story, too, but significantly more monsters throwing down.

I watched it today. Kind of mixed emotions. I thought the monsters were great, save for how bizarrely poor Ghidorah's effects were, but contrary to a lot of reviews I'm seeing it still didn't feel like it had enough of them. The human drama was yet again dumb as hell and omnipresent. It was better than the 2014 by far but since I gave that one a 4 it doesn't mean too much. Kinda feels like they buried my girl Mothra too, which is a shame because she was absolutely beautiful. Some of the shots in this movie were just stunning though, stuff I'd be willing to have framed. Overall I'm not bummed I saw it in theaters and it's a definite improvement but they're still not quite there. I'll watch the next one but I have tempered expectations.

I don't think there's ever been a single Godzilla film WITHOUT humans. I feel there needs to be some sort of human connection to these films, but the majority of the film should be about the monsters. Saw the film 2 times, on the second screening i noticed that they specified that "Boston has been evacuated, so it should be safe to have the monsters there." I can't remember if there's been a single godzilla film that has gone to these lengths with the cities. and i feel there should be casualities, and not just empty houses. I do hope that next time we see Mothra, she'll be less shiny and tron like, and more fuzzy like her original design. And especially, more of her. i was bummed how little we got her in the film.

Part of it does come across as "this director is ashamed to be making a monster/sci-fi/comic book movie, so they put in other stuff to make it seem like its own creative thing," but I think also a part of it might be the filmmakers having to appease the producers / studio execs. You wanna see people as out of touch as Vince McMahon...... it'd be them. In order to get stuff green lit, some filmmakers have to tone down a lot of nonsense. Although in this case, let's face it: there has ALWAYS been a large human presence in old Toho Godzilla/monster movies. It's nothing new, really.

fantastic entertainment and an absolute blast, monster punching at it's best we all love mothra don't we yeah she ain't coming back, she sacrificed herself to give her BOYFRIEND her power, that's why he turned from blue to red! but the humans HAD an important port in the story with the ORCA, and i was actually invested in their story but we don't go and plonk ourselves in front of the biggest loudest screen for ants do we no we go and watch humongous animals go at each other and i was NOT disappointed! funny moment when ghidorah get's his three heads shoved into the building ..... larry curly and mo indeed the shot of mothra flying down mandibles curling out may be my best single shot of the entire year so far, but clever editing made me bloody jump out ma seat the next second of the scene! i want that as a poster i laughed when everyone in the cinema all left before the very end, and saw the stinger at the end and now i have to bloody see KONG ISLAND don't I LONG LIVE THE KING INDEED

Yeah, after doing a marathon in the last year of Godzilla films I can say I can stand the human sections in this film LOADS more than the original films. They went on for frigging ever it seemed. Still say Gojira is still the end all be all of Godzilla in terms of story and message but at least this film didn't have the stupid ass kid from Godzilla's Revenge. UGH that was a rough sit through.

Finally got around to seeing it. I really enjoyed it! It had a sorta classic 60s Godzilla movie feel done by American's and cranked to 11. Elements of the plot and action were right from Destroy All Monsters. At first I thought it may have been a little too over the top during parts, but then I remember that in the old movies similar things happened and Godzilla has even fought on other planets!
I liked it a lot better than the 2014 film. The monster parts were certainly better; the destruction was massive, Ghidora was interesting, and Rodan... Damn, Rodan was a badass in this (Maybe even the best Rodan ever???). The only thing that annoyed me was a carry-over from the 2014 one, so many of the monsters look so ugly it hurts. Godzilla is just a big grey blob. I think they did Mothra the most disservice in that regard, I like the addition of her claws but she should have been a tad bit cuter. Speaking of Mothra, she was the monster that could have used more screen time, or at least more of the secret exposition treatment so it was clear that she was different from some of the regular run of the mill titans and why.
But then I remember the run time, the movie seemed too long. I don't want to spoil things so I'll be vague, but there were too many Godzilla recovery scenes... At times it felt like I was watching a Gamera movie because of it.
I also liked the human parts better than the 2014 one. The Monarch crew, the dad, and in particular Serizawa were all good. I even liked the girl and the evil British guy... But the mother... She single-handedly almost ruined portions of the movie. But, at least we didn't have boring stone faced military man number 37 as the main character.
The 2014 one didn't have me excited for the next entry, but this one certainly has me hyped for what comes next. I do wonder what they will do, this one was such a spectacle at parts it felt like a finale, and I have no idea how Kong matches up against Godzilla... Granted, the title of the movie could always be misleading... They might fight once and then team up. They do seem to be working towards having the hollow earth being the central part of the next one... So maybe the big baddies will be SEATOPIA and Megalon! Hahahah!

Although in this case, let's face it: there has ALWAYS been a large human presence in old Toho Godzilla/monster movies. It's nothing new, really. Yeah, going by a lot of what was in the movie I have to assume the people actually making the flick wanted to make a love letter to the Godzilla franchise (all the franchise nods, music cues, etc. really stuck out), but I have to think the studio probably wanted a bunch of extra human drama scenes, since there's still a "blockbuster formula" these days that studios are afraid to veer off from. Still, saw it today and I honestly didn't mind the human stuff too much, it didn't weigh things down as badly as some people have said (at least to me), with a couple of legitimately good moments in there. The monster stuff was appropriately over the top, though oddly I understand where some kaiju aficionados are coming from with their critiques of the some aspects of it, since the movie had to balance the straight up monster fights with the more dramatic horror of the destruction kaiju cause to human beings. The 2014 film had some wonderfully shot sequences when they finally got around to showing the monsters that really captured the scope and horror of something so enormous and unstoppable, while this one was definitely focused more on getting to the throw-down, which I understand. Either way, I thought it was a fun time, and I appreciated the work that went into communicating personality in the monsters' faces and movements.

Elements of the plot and action were right from Destroy All Monsters. There are elements from sooooo many old Godzilla and even non-Godzilla Toho films in this it's not even funny. Some are obvious (the twins working for Monarch, "Monster X", etc) and some are a bit more subtle. The submarine mention near the end was a callback to Atragon, Atlantis is a callback to that film, GVMegalon and the Rebirth of Mothra films. Mothra giving her "essence" in death as a power-up for another monster is straight out of GMK, overcharged G is straight out of Desotroyah.

Also a call back to “Godzilla vs Mechagodzilla (II)’ when Fire Rodan sacrificed himself to revive Godzilla.

Yeah, and we also saw that Monarch had masers in their secret base (That we didn't get to see them use!)... And there was what looked like a metal skull under construction? Maybe a Mecha-Godzilla? But the parts I saw that made me think of Destroy All Monsters was the use of a control unit (I guess that covers a bunch of old Godzilla movies like Astro and vs Gigan too), using it to attack around the glove, and the part where a monster is dropped from insane heights and lives. The insane heights parts was one of the parts where I thought the movie could be seen as silly, but it has already happened in Godzilla movies so I was fine with it. The only part I thought was perhaps a little too over the top was the giant battle taking place around these people as they try to navigate the city and find the kid. When it comes to people navigating a destroyed city in a Godzilla movie "Return of Godzilla" is definitely the gold standard, this 2019 one felt a little too silly in how they executed it.

A clear look at the titan Behemoth from the movie; One of the more unique monsters in the film, really stood out each time I've seen it.

I appreciated that the titan in equatorial Africa was labeled "Mokele Mbembe", a long-standing Congo river basin area legend of a sauropod dinosaur still living in the wild.

I figured this would be the best place to post this! I got King Ghidorah in this gachapon I found yesterday. The other possible gets are 1954 Godzilla, 2014 Godzilla, and 2019 Godzilla. I wanted 1954 Godzilla the most but King Ghidorah was my second most wanted one so I'm happy. Honestly none of them are bad, though.

I have seen clear pics of the map and the titan names. There is no original Toho monsters (except for the ones in the film). But they look like they are mostly based on the area where they are found on local legends. Like the one in Scotland is at Loch Ness, and the one in Australia located under Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) is called Bunyip. Here is the map: knowyourmeme.com/photos/1503890-godzilla

Like, buildings were literally melting in his wake as he walked, he was giving off so much heat. Which brings me to something dumb I noticed: for the last 10 minutes or so, they keep making a point of Godzilla's radiation levels being off the charts, so they need to get away. So, as they're flying away, they're watching Godzilla basically explode... with the hatch door wide open. Like, the first thing I thought upon seeing that was "Congratulations! You all have cancer." Seriously, there's no way they were far enough away for the radiation waves to not hit them.
