What are some film sequels where they waited too long to make it. I'd put Crocodile Dundee in LA on that list, If it came out in the early 90s it may have worked but by 2001 it was too late to try to revive the character (and really, besides "That's a knife" (not "this is a knife"), is there anything really memorable about the first two?).

Gremlins 2. Came out 6 years after the first movie and Gremlins had just moved out of the poplar lexicon by then. While I personally like it better than the 1st movie, it just came a little too late.

Odd Couple 2. Don't think the original movie was in the zeitgeist in the late 90s. They were probably playing off the success of Grumpy Old Men, but even that was five years old by that point and already had a sequel.
Tron Legacy. I don't think Tron had enough cachet with the public at the time of the sequel.

Bad Santa 2.
You don’t really realize how important Thurman Merman was to making the original work until you see the sequel and he’s older and not a huge part of it.

I knew about 15 min in that I was about to be bitterly disappointed I swear the beginning with Carey acting like he's an incapacitated old man went on for like 15 mins but it was more like 3 mins

The Slap Shot sequels.
Sure, take a movie that’s always in the top 3 sports movies ever and shit out a sequel with Gary Bussey and Stephan Baldwin.....then crap out a worse sequel with Leslie Neilson and Thurman Merman in bit parts as your “stars”.

Sin City 2 always struck me as the poster boy for this. Came out after any momentum the original had was long gone, and the value of an association with Frank Miller plummeted after the likes of All Star Batman & Robin and Holy Terror. It might have had a bigger presence even as late as 2009, but by the time it released, there was no novelty.

Something something Crystal Skull. And they're talking about making another one! No offense to Harrison Ford, but the last thing I want to do is see a 77 year old man grandpa'ing his way into another adventure. It'll be like that scene with Robert Deniro in the Irishman where he beats up the shopkeeper.

Blade Runner 2049. Good as it was, the ideal time for the sequel was in the mid-'90s.

The Shining sequel is probably the poster boy for this.

X-Files doing a movie a few years back probably qualifies. If it had either been sooner, or even a little later to coincide with the revival series, it might not have felt so, "wait, why?"

I echo Dumb & Dumber 2. Went to see that with a co-worker who was loving it so I just kinda sat there in misery. Hoping Bad Boys III doesn’t fall into this but it’s looking like it easily could.

Blade Runner 2049. Good as it was, the ideal time for the sequel was in the mid-'90s. Tron Legacy feels like the same thing. Interesting visual style to it, but it feels like a movie that would have stood out far more circa 1997 than 2010, even if the digital effects for it weren't as practical till the latter year. Something something Crystal Skull. And they're talking about making another one! No offense to Harrison Ford, but the last thing I want to do is see a 77 year old man grandpa'ing his way into another adventure. It'll be like that seen with Robert Deniro in the Irishman where he beats up the shopkeeper. Its a pity that animated films have such a stigma with mass audiences, because something like an animated adaptation of Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis with Ford voicing Indy could be amazing with Disney and/or Pixar animation.
