Can we count Connery coming back as Bond for Never Say Never Again. Twelve years after his last Bond film. Believe it or not, that is not a sequel. That is a remake that simply stars the original actor.

Speaking of January releases, xXx: Return of Xander Cage is definitely a good candidate for this topic. Now, personally, I found it enjoyable, but that didn't mean that I didn't see any issues with this film. First off, it was kind of too late because by 2017, I am certain that a lot of people had forgotten about xXx. I know a lot of people like to forget about xXx: State of the Union (or The Next Level, as it's known in Europe), but were people really hoping for a sequel to a spy flick with an "extreme" style after 14 years (To be frank, xXx 3 came out in January 2017, whereas the first film was released in August 2002; so not a full 15 years)? In some ways, they probably were hoping for it to cater to the Fast & Furious audience. The movie was kind of like those films, if you really think about it. Eh, to be fair, Vin Diesel himself said he only did xXx: Return of Xander Cage is because he wanted do a film that was fun and he could smile, joke, and have a good time for a change after the tragedy of Paul Walker and the seriousness of later Fast and Furious sequels. So I view it as more of a therapy film for him than actually attempting to have another box office franchise. You made a good point, but this movie was also in development hell even before Paul Walker's passing. I get that Vin wanted to make a movie that was all fun and jokey in some areas, which it was. It even felt like the portrayal of Xander Cage was a bit different in this film than the thrill-seeking, take-no-shit badass that he was in the first film. I also could tell that with Xander being in the DR, that was lifted from the fourth F&F film, where Dom was during the time between the first film and the fourth film (If you really want to get technical, he probably went around Central America to the Dominican Republic at some point, as depicted in that short film, Los Bandoleros).

I don't know why Star Trek Beyond was not more successful. I don't think they waited too long. I think people may have lost interest with the franchise or were more interested in other movies released in the weeks after Star Trek opened. Into Darkness sucked, that's why nobody gave a third go a chance. Pretty much. It grossed a lot but it was not well recieved. Between the logic holes The hes not Khan psych he's khan marketing Doing Wrath of Khan poorly. Making the federation rotten from the top down. Suddenly being able to teleport insane distances without issue (to the point you ask why do we need spaceships) Oh AND CURING DEATH. Theres a lot wrong with that movie.

With Dumb and Dumber what was odd is how weirdly mean-spirited they made Harry and Lloyd. Originally there was a bit of innocence to their stupidity. In the sequel they're just assholes.
Sin City's main draw was its unique visuals. By the time 2 came out it was old hat.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife, unfortunately. It's shaping up to be great, but the lack of Harold Ramis is quite a shame.
I was about to say the Santa Clause 2, but honestly, a sequel wasn't really "too late" as much as entirely unnecessary. The first film was a very near-perfect balance of heart and cynicism, and the second was cute but pushed it firmly into saccharine territory.

Of all the Bond movies to remake of course it would be f***ing Thunderball. McClory couldn’t have co-written Goldfinger or From Russia With Love, nope he had the rights to f***ing Thunderball Yeah, The Santa Clause sequels completely missed the tone of the original. I absolutely hate the sequels, but love the original

Bad Santa 2. You don’t really realize how important Thurman Merman was to making the original work until you see the sequel and he’s older and not a huge part of it. I just caught this on tv the other day. He went from being a naive pitiable kid to an overgrown pathetic man-baby and was completely unsympathetic. He was bigger than most of the adults not just the midget this time yet he was written like a small child still, which just made him seem like he had mental handicaps, so all the jokes at his expense were so cringe.

Joker - really enjoyed it, give me both Taxi Driver and King of Comedy vibes from this (some irony there with Scorsese's comments)
Zombieland Double Tap - fun, Zoey Duetch stole the show for me, with a character that could of been annoying if it wasnt for Duetch's likeability

Vin Diesel has pretty much adopted the Dominican Republic as his home country and finds any excuse he can to film there (he filmed a good chunk of the next F&F movie there as well), and is one of the leading proponents of turning it into the "Caribbean Hollywood."

Yeah, The Santa Clause sequels completely missed the tone of the original. I absolutely hate the sequels, but love the original I will admit that I actually watched all 3 movies yesterday and the original is by no means a great movie, but it has some real heart behind it and you can tell some real passion coming from the people in front of the camera. The sequels felt like made for DVD movies. I still don't know what they were thinking with the robotic Santa. Take that out and add more time to tell the romance between Tim Allen and Elizabeth Mitchell and add more time to repairing Tim Allen's relationship with his son and you've got at least a better chance at something with some heart to it.

I really feel like any movie that they're trying to get into theaters to recapture nostalgia is going to fall into this category soon enough.

I'll also say The Thing, since my original pick of Anchorman 2 was already taken, but they at least made it a prequel and not a sequel or a reboot. But it's still bizarre taking place in what's supposed to be 1980, but barely trying to give anyone in the movie a look that makes them look like they're in the 80's.

How could I forget, especially this week... A CHRISTMAS STORY 2. I was coming to say just that. However there is a sequel that was made in 1994. Like A Christmas Story it is based on Jean Shepard's revisionist stories of his youth. It is called "My Summer Story" originally released in theaters as "It Runs In The Family"

I just saw a commercial for a show called "Lincoln Rhyme" which will air on NBC. Based on The Bone Collector book, which was a movie with Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie twenty years ago. Kind of a random book and movie to revive over twenty years later. Not as random as it might seem. Suspense Thriller series have seen a resurgence thanks to the likes of the Jack Reacher and Alex Cross franchises. Deaver's Lincoln Rhyme is a fairly big one in that field, so makes sense that'd be one they'd aim to adapt.
