Blade Runner 2049. Good as it was, the ideal time for the sequel was in the mid-'90s. Tron Legacy feels like the same thing. Interesting visual style to it, but it feels like a movie that would have stood out far more circa 1997 than 2010, even if the digital effects for it weren't as practical till the latter year. And they're talking about making another one! No offense to Harrison Ford, but the last thing I want to do is see a 77 year old man grandpa'ing his way into another adventure. It'll be like that seen with Robert Deniro in the Irishman where he beats up the shopkeeper. Its a pity that animated films have such a stigma with mass audiences, because something like an animated adaptation of Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis with Ford voicing Indy could be amazing with Disney and/or Pixar animation. Tron Legacy, to me, is a very underrated movie. I hate that Disney abandoned it Was looking forward to the way 3 was setup. Maybe we can get part 3 in 20 years

But "trilogies" were the fad du jour of Hollywood at the time and no studio wanted to make just one good movie when they can make a franchise.

It was definitely made with a planned story arc it never got to tell. Some good teaser clips out that were made with the sequel in mind. From what I gather all involved want to make a sequel but Disney will not green light it

Zombieland 2 was way too late to capitalize on the goodwill the original had.

The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day is a good example of this. Okay, I know that the first film was a cult hit, with many shirts coming out and all that stuff, but was there really any demand for a sequel? I heard that Troy Duffy had written the script a while before production started. However, it came out a decade after the first film was released and while I enjoyed it at the time, I can now see that it's lackluster. Not like the first film was actually good, per se, but it's enjoyable and has its charm. I also know that the second film was actually set a decade after the events of the first film, but still, I wasn't sure if there was that much demand for it. I also must note that the film ended on a cliffhanger, but there had been talk of a third film or even a TV show. Both things have yet to happen.

Star Trek Beyond. It's actually quite good, but it came out so long after Into Darkness underperformed that the reboot series was all but forgotten by the time they tried to course-correct.

Into Darkness is a curious case. It's the highest-grossing Star Trek movie by some considerable distance, but the bungled marketing campaign combined with high production costs really put a dent in its profitability. Beyond was excellent. I'm glad the cast is getting one last chance.

Can we count Connery coming back as Bond for Never Say Never Again. Twelve years after his last Bond film.

It was definitely a case of time and paying for Into Darkness' sins. The casual audience had moved on to Marvel moves by that point and the more hardcore Trek audience lost interest after how lousy STID turned out. Not too dissimilar to Dark Fate where the recent Terminator films (especially Genysis) meant there simply was no audience for another one, especially when spoilers about the twist at the beginning came out.

Man, there are some excellent suggestions in here.
What makes some of them hurt more are when the sequel(s) were actually good films too, but either overshadowed by classic originals and/or just didn't do well at the box office despite the praise.

Blues Brothers 2000.
a horrible horrible film that had no right to be made.

I don't know why Star Trek Beyond was not more successful. I don't think they waited too long. I think people may have lost interest with the franchise or were more interested in other movies released in the weeks after Star Trek opened.

Into Darkness sucked, that's why nobody gave a third go a chance.

It Runs in the Family/My Summer Story.
I've referenced this movie time and time again on these boards, but it bears repeating; the film references the memoirs from the rest of the book which inspired A Christmas Story, with one slight problem. It came out a decade after A Christmas Story, and has since been overshadowed by the much worse A Christmas Story 2, which came out 25+ years after the original.

My memory is hazy, but I don't remember it being marketed as a sequel to A Christmas Story, but I could be wrong. In fact, I barely remember any marketing for it. I wonder if it is a case of a studio having no faith in something and not getting behind it.

However, it technically follows the plot of A Christmas Story, so it counts as a sequel.

Anchorman 2. Nearly ten years after the original when people were pretty sick of what a meme the first movie had become, and with no interesting ideas to boot

(and really, besides "That's a knife" (not "this is a knife"), is there anything really memorable about the first two?). Linda Kozlowski in a thong? What? I sure as hell remembered it!
