Mask Of Zorro was a good summer movie, and there was a lot of potential in that franchise. If I recall it even did well, they just waited forever to capitalize.

“Split” coming out about 20 years after “Unbreakable”. Sixteen years, actually. Unbreakable came out in November 2000, while Split came out in January 2017.

Bad Santa 2. You don’t really realize how important Thurman Merman was to making the original work until you see the sequel and he’s older and not a huge part of it. Agreed. The first one may have been raunchy as hell, but it also had a lot of heart to help balance it out. The second one was just raunch for the sake of raunch with almost none of the heart that helped make the original the modern cult classic it is.

The director and original book author wanted to do a sequel to see what becomes of the characters when they reach their 30s or 40s. The problem was the sequel was really unremarkable... and it did not match the original thematically.

But often our lives 20 years later don't match our lives from when we were in our early 20's thematically, and are also unremarkable, so isn't that kind of appropriate?

I don't think Split really fits. It wasn't marketed as a sequel. They hid the fact that it was connected to Unbreakable, and it's basically a standalone movie with a cameo at the end which signifies it is part of the Unbreakable series. The movie was a big success. It was largely marketed on James McAvoy's performance and it being a return to form for Shyamalan.

Sin City 2 always struck me as the poster boy for this. Came out after any momentum the original had was long gone, and the value of an association with Frank Miller plummeted after the likes of All Star Batman & Robin and Holy Terror. It might have had a bigger presence even as late as 2009, but by the time it released, there was no novelty. The Spirit came out in 2008 and I think the film making novelty of how Sin City was made was completely destroyed by that insane bomb. That SC2 came out *6 years* after The Spirit is almost more nuts.

With Dumb and Dumber what was odd is how weirdly mean-spirited they made Harry and Lloyd. Originally there was a bit of innocence to their stupidity. In the sequel they're just assholes. Sin City's main draw was its unique visuals. By the time 2 came out it was old hat. Right. They were stupid, but were absolutely good guys at heart. The sequel turned Lloyd into a really creepy pervert.

Thought of another one.
The strangers was a pretty middle of the road horror film in 2008 that while it made a bunch of money...
A sequel came out 10 years later in 2018. Nobody I knew realized it was a sequel

Star Wars Episode VII. You could have tried that in the late 80s/early 90s or 2008.
