Sin City 2 always struck me as the poster boy for this. Came out after any momentum the original had was long gone, and the value of an association with Frank Miller plummeted after the likes of All Star Batman & Robin and Holy Terror. It might have had a bigger presence even as late as 2009, but by the time it released, there was no novelty. Came here to post the same thing.

Its a pity that animated films have such a stigma with mass audiences, because something like an animated adaptation of Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis with Ford voicing Indy could be amazing with Disney and/or Pixar animation. Holy shit, give me an animated Indy movie in the art style of The Rescuers Down Under or Aladdin and I'd be there opening night.

Yeah this is really an incredible idea I’ve never heard or thought of before. Edit: or even something like Spider-verse with a defined linear style throughout or something like the Aniimatrix with a couple different styles to depict different times in Indy’s life.

The Godfather Part III Why? Because Francis Ford Coppola spent a little too much money on the box office bomb "One From The heart"

My worry about Bad Boys 3 is that it's a January release As best described by RedLetterMedia: Also I've said it before in similar conversations, but Zoolander 2.

Speaking of January releases, xXx: Return of Xander Cage is definitely a good candidate for this topic. Now, personally, I found it enjoyable, but that didn't mean that I didn't see any issues with this film. First off, it was kind of too late because by 2017, I am certain that a lot of people had forgotten about xXx. I know a lot of people like to forget about xXx: State of the Union (or The Next Level, as it's known in Europe), but were people really hoping for a sequel to a spy flick with an "extreme" style after 14 years (To be frank, xXx 3 came out in January 2017, whereas the first film was released in August 2002; so not a full 15 years)?
In some ways, they probably were hoping for it to cater to the Fast & Furious audience. The movie was kind of like those films, if you really think about it.

One for the future but they really should have got one of the hundred or so planned Avatar sequels out by now.

Terminator 3 onwards.
12 years after T2.
And I like the franchise, including T5 and T6.

Kinda seems to me like the delay for Avatar sequels is purely down to James Cameron having no f***ing clue what he wants to do with the franchise. I mean sure, Disney buying Fox maybe muddled things a little, but when your first movie of a "totally planned, you guys, honest!" series of films solves the entire conflict, you're off to a bad start.

The reason I've always seen given is Rodriguez not wanting to recast Marv, and Rourke being busy or reluctant, plus wrangling anyone else he could get to return, but Marv is covered in so many prosthetics, anyway. He should have either just recast, or maybe have Rourke just dub over someone else.

Legend of Zorro coming out 7 years after Mask of Zorro makes some narrative sense, I guess, but it really didn't do the film any favors.

Gremlins 2. Came out 6 years after the first movie and Gremlins had just moved out of the poplar lexicon by then. While I personally like it better than the 1st movie, it just came a little too late. I think Gremlins 2 is vastly superior to the first.

I don't think any of them came out too late. We live in a world where people are excited about a new Bill and Ted movie coming out.
Most of what is listed are sequels that came out a long time after and were bad movies.

You hold off too long on a sequel, and it becomes less a sequel and more of a reunion film.
People want a sequel to see their favorite characters on a new adventure. Not to get sentimental about old times or complain they're too old for this shit.

I agree that Gremlins 2 is both really good (maybe better than the first movie) and also came out a little late to work off the popularity of the first movie.

You could argue Ghostbusters 2. Yeah, you did have the Real Ghostbusters cartoon to keep them in the public eye, but there was no live action movie for the older fans until 1989, and by then, many of them had moved on.

Eh, to be fair, Vin Diesel himself said he only did xXx: Return of Xander Cage is because he wanted do a film that was fun and he could smile, joke, and have a good time for a change after the tragedy of Paul Walker and the seriousness of later Fast and Furious sequels. So I view it as more of a therapy film for him than actually attempting to have another box office franchise.

Add on the Riddick sequel coming out like 10 years after
