Who are some people you can think of over the years that had the gimmick, look, music etc but just didn't make it for one reason or another
Nathan Jones is up there. Those vignettes were fire and that jobber match against Shannon Moore is still memorable but dude couldn't hang and left

Sean O’Haire I liked his whole “not telling you anything you already know” character and he was in amazing shape. Yet the gimmick was dropped and soon after he was gone and sadly a decade later, he was dead.

The Missing Link. He had the maniac persona, face paint, and physique but didn't last long in the WWF.

The vignettes were amazing and I was fully into it...then he had to do it live and that was that I liked him in the ring as a high impact guy too. It’s too bad how far he fell.

For me, Carlito. He should have had a T-Shirt “I don’t care and it shows”. Loved the character but once it became apparent he didn’t care, I couldn’t anymore either.

Repackaged, re-gimmicked and pushed three (?) times and still didn’t get anywhere, right?

I'm also going to give the ultimate example here.
Hade Vansen.
He had a good look, and that one promo he had was pretty damned intriguing.
And then we literally never saw him again.

Tiger Ali Singh. If he'd been able to work, he could have been a big deal.
I'd put Jean Pierre LaFitte on this list, too.

The 90s had a lot of these. You can easily picture Ludvig Borga or Ahmed Johnson or Bam Bam Bigelow doing the Big Boss Man house show tour with Hogan 10 years earlier or being Cena's monster of the month 10 years later, they just all happened to wrestle in the WWF during the only timeframe where they weren't pushing those types of gimmick.

But that gimmick was never going to work with someone who was absolutely terrible with a live mic

This isn't totally accurate. Johnson had a rocket strapped to him, he just couldn't stop hurting himself and others. And Bigelow main evented a Mania. A shit one, but a Mania nonetheless.

Bam Bam Bigelow is a legend and was super successful wherever he went. He had mainstream press, won or worked titles in every promotion he worked, and I think he made it as much as anyone. He did hate being in one promotion for too long, which maybe hurt him, but he certainly is not an example of this topic.
