I like it when Iman bullies Kevin Feige about comic book knowledge.

Feel like if The Marvels is doing this badly then WBD should be terrified for Aquaman, because that basically has all of the same things running against its chances as well as a host of others. As bad as DC has been, they have not actively been fighting their primary demo. DC has. You can't get mad at people for not wanting to go to something Disney told them was not for them.

It's going to be the biggest financial bomb in the post-covid world. While you had fun, about 70% of their core audience is gone Their loss.

It's a publicly traded company. They're not going to keep shoveling out movies for one brand if they keep losing money. Shareholders would push to remove the BoG

Please, no matter what happens, never dump Iman. She's too damn perfect as Kamala.

Damn, when real life becomes a GIF of Thanos from Endgame Power Stone-punching Carol out of frame.

Too bad. I’d say this was one of the better post-Endgame MCU movies. I’d probably rank it 3rd after No Way Home and GotG 3

You know, a small part of me wants to just give them this one, considering how hard they've been losing all year. Hell, they got BTFO so hard by Barbie and Super Mario that they had to retroactively make them "not woke at all, actually" just to save face. Then I remember that they're bigots and grifters and don't deserve anything nice.

You know, the movie that took stances against animal cruelty, animal testing, eugenics, and trafficking. Nothing woke or political there.

Wow, this thing is absolutely cratering.
MCU's been having its problems in Phase 4/5, but still, it's pretty staggering to see it falling this badly.
It's not even like it's some disaster of a film either, it sounds pretty fun and I like the three leads. Can't ignore there's some real re-thinking needed for the MCU.

Studios in general need some re-thinking. Half of the top fifteen highest-grossing films of the year actually lost money at the box office, and 75% of all the remakes, sequels, and spinoffs of existing IPs released this year either failed to perform to expectations or outright bombed. Unsurprisingly it's the studios that have push their own streaming services hardest that have taken the biggest beat-downs (Disney, WBD, Paramount). They need audiences to see their movies in theatres, but need those same movies streaming ASAP to drive subscriptions, and it's clear that they can't achieve both.

Phase 1 through 3 saw 23 movies in 11 years. Phase 4 and 5 has seen 10 movies in 2 years, it's also seen 10 Disney+ shows in that same time. Marvel has oversaturated their IP. To be clear, I liked The Marvels, I thought it was a fun movie, and hope all 3 leads stick around. And I think the biggest issue for the MCU right now, is that despite all the stuff they've released for Phases 4 and 5, we still don't have a lead character. Phases 1 through 3 had Tony and Steve as the mains with Thor right behind them. We went on the journey with them, we got invested in them, and saw their characters grow. We're not spending time characters in the MCU right now, we're not seeing them grow, and we can't really get invested because characters disappear and we're hit with stuff left and right. We met Kate in Hawkeye and her character was nowhere to be seen till the very end of The Marvels. Yelena hasn't been seen since Hawkeye. Shang-Chi is off doing whatever. Kamala was in The Marvels but who knows when we're gonna see her again with how the MCU is now..

Kamala was in The Marvels but who knows when we're gonna see her again with how the MCU is now.. It's not even a question of having a main character. It's how everything is so disconnected. Phase 1 was tight, Phase 2 was 1 sequel and Phase 3 was the culmination of the story that's been going since the first Captain America. Phase 4 and 5? Quite frankly, I didn't even know there was a phase 5! There just seems to have movies, no clear plan to what the endgame's going to be, no clear connection between movies hinting to something really big coming up. It's like they're doing a Phase 2 without Phase 1. Or the DCEU but with less recognizable characters. Speaking of DCEU, having finally watched Eternals, now we already have our "Evil Superman" movie. Hopefully WB watches how no one remembers that and concludes that that is a terrible idea.

These things cost a LOT of money to make so when they bomb they bomb hard. I never hope for a movie to bomb because I have no doubt that plenty of people went to see the Marvels enjoyed it, but selfishly I hope it encourages them to revise their strategy and scale things down. For me their movies still feel waaay too 'designed by committee' and by-the-numbers which I guess is how it's going to be when every film is budgeted at 250 million, you can get away with churning that stuff out when the brand feels hot but once it goes cold you start crashing hard. They've got lots of new faces in the MCU and that's good, they needed that, but they also need a fresh-feeling formula to go along with it.

And then you have inflation, theaters still not fully recovering from the pandemic, the absurd price of an average night going to the cinema, etc. Disney in particular feels like it's been phoning in its marketing the past few years. And that was before the strikes made it even worse.

I don't know how much not really having a main character factors into it since I was a lot more invested in the first three phases than I am now despite actively disliking Tony as a character for most of the movies (especially Homecoming) and never really especially having an opinion on Steve.

A big issue is that Phase 4 on didn’t have a clear goal it was building to until way too late. Phase 1 was building to Avengers, Phase 2 and 3 were building to Thanos. Phase 4 was building to??
And this is where I feel corporate interference came into play. I remember around the time of Endgame, Feige came out and said they weren’t calling it Phase 4 because they were treating it differently then what came before. It was supposed to be about world building and expanding, hence why there was no Avengers movie planned. The whole Multiverse Saga thing feels like it was thought up after the fact
