I wonder if anyone else here finds Dean Ambrose the least impressive member of the Shield? He's not bad or anything, but between him Rollins and Reigns wrestling and talking he comes across as an average wrestler who's best talent is promoting himself

I think his greatest attribute is the ability to cut a promo without sounding like he's reading from a script...yet that's immediately countered by how forced his delivery is. Decent in the ring, but nothing mind-blowing. Someone had a sig that said "Disgruntled Jazz Musician" that perfectly summed up his look for me.
So yeah, not impressed at all.

He's been better used as the more impressive mouthpiece of the Shield, and in a way seems to be the leader since he's the one working singles matches, but yeah, he hasn't really had much of a chance to truly shine in ring

That's what happens when you're exposed outside of the confines of a 2 minute YouTube video of a bad Heath Ledger imitation and overuse of cuss words. A very average looking guy with a average-decent promo delivery. He was never going to live up to the ridiculous hyperbole Internet fans piled on him.

Ambrose is a victim of 'being overhyped online', much like Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker, people said 'oh he was so great', but when you see it for yourself, one goes 'really? that's it? get this Mother Brawler out of here'

Roman Reigns is the most impressive. Other two are at the same level IMO.

Ambrose is fine as a wrestler and on the mic. His expressions need work though. He tries too hard to look evil

I wouldn't say he's the least impressive so much as I've been pleasantly surprised by how great Roman Reigns is and how good Seth Rollins suddenly became on the mic after his stint in FCW/NXT.

Someone PLEASE explain to me what is impressive about Roman Reigns. Dean Ambrose is the charisma, Seth Rollins is the wrestling, what the f*** is Reigns supposed to be other than a lame growl?

I feel no charisma from Dean Ambrose. In fact charisma is something that draws people in, and Dean Ambrose actively repels me.

I'd say it's a mixture of him being less impressive than expected (high expectations, overhype, whatever you wanna call it) and Rollins and Reigns being more impressive than expected - one being written off as uncharismatic and the other a "typical FCW bodybuilder." Put that together, and Ambrose comes out sort of a letdown.

I'm so sick of the "so and so is the weak link in The Shield". They're all great, and together they're fantastic. I f***ing hate internet fans sometimes. Just enjoy what is one of the most entertaining things we've gotten in wrestling for years and stop being overly critical for once.
Ambrose is a brilliant promo, and is very good in the ring. If you can't see it then it's sad.

As for his promo work, I simply look for different things in promos than most people. I've never enjoyed heel promos. I'm not called an internet fan very often. I just wondered because I considered most 'net fans to probably be fans of Ambrose first and the Shield second because of the way Ambrose was built up while people were waiting for him to debut. I wasn't into that so I was wondering about people's mindset and their reaction to the skills he showed.

Having watched Ambrose since he started to get big in CZW, if you were expecting a great wrestler like Daniel Bryan you would be disappointed. Ambrose is good in the ring, but his move set is very basic and his best quality is his psychology use in matches. Seth Rollins is an extremely flashy wrestler that some turned on due to his lack of mic skills before coming to WWE. Roman Reigns looks impressive and has a great spear, but IMO if he were to wrestle more single matches he'd struggle a bit. Not a knock, just he's in a role right now that suits him
He did swear from time to time, but his promos weren't reliant on swearing.
Kind of OT and not calling anybody out, but doesn't it seem like threads like this pop up everytime an "Indy Darling" gets called up? Seems to have happened with Punk, Bryan, and Cesaro at least.

Sounds like people were expecting Daniel Bryan. He's totally not that. Completely different style, one that doesn't rely on an impressive athleticism. He's an old school heel. From the promos to the in ring wrestling.
It's his ring psychology and yes, charisma, that draws people in. You may not see it, but actually listen to the said hype you are trashing.
When DB was hyped, it was all about his in ring abilities with some bringing up that he's also pretty fun on the mic too. DB is now showing this in spades.
With Punk, it was his mic work and his ability to draw people into his matches. He wasn't a technical wizard like Bryan, hell, he's pretty sloppy. I think we've all seen what Punk can do now.
With Cesaro, it was that he's highly adaptive, can wrestle in a slew of styles excellently, and strength wise, he's a freak of nature. Guess what? We are now seeing this, though it may take more for him to escape the mid-card.
So now with Ambrose, it's about his ability to really place immerse himself into his persona, to the point where some think there's an actual screw loose. He puts it in his promos, his in ring work, his out of ring mannerisms. He's an old school wrestler, the ones I used to hear people around here dream were in the E. Guys who could really BECOME their gimmicks. He's that.

His best quality is his psychology use in matches. To paraphrase Bret, "Psychology, they call it in wrestling. Some guys got it, some guys don't, some guys never get it, and some guys don't even know what it is". I'm not even sure I'm fully keen on what Bret talks about when I watch the matches, but it's hard not to see something special about what Ambrose brings to the matches he's in. A lot of the people here critiquing him about what a let down he's been will almost assuredly change their tune when they see him in a singles feud, which will give him time to develop a story line around a series of matches.

While not a technical wizard, Punk did have to tone down his style a lot when he came to WWE. He wasn't a "spot monkey" but he wasn't exactly cautious in the ring either.

As other people have said, Ambrose's strength is in his psychology in a match and in a feud. I've been comparing him to Terry Funk and Roddy Piper for a while now, and while its harder to bring that out in the Shield gimmick, if he gets a singles feud/starts going after singles gold, it will come out. Unfortunately or maybe even fortunately for Ambrose, a lot of what brought him to the dance was his death match work in places like CZW. You're not going to see a heavily bloodied maniacal Dean Ambrose after a 30+ minute match cutting an "FTW" style promo in WWE. Some of what made him great, you're not going to get in current day WWE. I'd argue that where as people feel CM Punk is the one that could carry the ECW torch and fit in the best with a modern day ECW, I say that Dean Ambrose is really that guy.
