So I've been reading all over the internet and watching youtube that there was video footage of Owen Hart's deadly fall at Over The Edge 1999. It's been rumored that it's locked deep in the WWE video vault saying "never to view, duplicate, or destroy." However, I find these rumors dubious at best and here's why....
A)The Lights Were Out During The Fall - His fall happened during a promo for his upcoming IC title match with The Godfather, and while I have no trouble believing the WWF/E has multiple cameras all over the arena and records things that may not make it to TV, it would've been difficult at best to capture it. They would've had to expect him to fall in the first place, and who can expect a freak accident?
B)There Were Virtually No Camera Phones Back in 1999 - The few of them that might've existed were very expensive and not of good quality. If there was anything to capture in the arena, it would've been what was playing on the titantron, which everybody in the audience had their attention turned to. It would've been a shoddy glimpse at best depending on where the fan in question was sitting to record it.
It's obvious that if WWE had footage of the fall, it would never be released to the general public for viewing, but my question is there any evidence that the video exists in the first place? Has Vince McMahon or anybody close to him ever openly spoke about it during the trial he had with Owen's widow Martha Hart? Has Martha ever acknowledge it?
I keep hearing people say that such footage exists, but I'm skeptical at best.
Thoughts on the subject matter.

The hard cam is always going, isn't it? A lot of the matches on those recent "Unreleased" DVDs are steady hard-cam footage with a running clock from the start of the taping.
I'm sure that's what it is - dark hard-cam footage of him crashing into the ring.

I remember as far back as the mid-2000s that some people claimed to have had footage. Hell, when YouTube was in its infancy, some videos that people posted were of New Jack pushing Vic Grimes off the scaffold onto those tables.
The only thing closest to footage were photos that were shot live from the event. I saw them on some website back in the mid-2000s and while some of the images were hard to see (hard as in painful, not as in difficult), it does give some insight from someone who had attended that event.

Understandably no camera phones but also no camera phones during the curtain call and that ended up on video. I don't doubt WWE has footage of it from the hardcam and I'm sure there was a camera on him so that they were ready to cut to him after the promo. I never want to see it and I don't want anyone to see it so keep it locked up. Or just destroy it.

I’ve always heard it was Kevin Kelly who said there were 3 tapes with the same instructions on a shelf, Owens fall, Droz’s match with D’Lo and another I can’t recall.
Not sure if anyone else can confirm hearing that same thing though.

As people have said, the footage almost certainly exists, but I could probably count on my fingers the number of people who've seen it or ever will see it.
It apparently still exists in the archive with a note that it's not to be watched, duplicated, broadcast or destroyed, I would imagine purely for legal purposes.

Oh yeah the footage exists locked in WWE's vault, and labeled "Do not watch or destroy."

outside of legal reasons, why would anyone want to intentionally watch that tape?

outside of legal reasons, why would anyone want to intentionally watch that tape? probably the same way people have watched Twilight Zone Movie accident, Tommy Cooper dying on live TV or the Budd Dwyer press conference and morbid curiosity just gets the better of them

I fully expect that someday someone will actually get ahold of a WWF/WWE "Do not watch, duplicate or destroy" video and the only things on it will be the never aired "Blonde Bytch Project" segments and some old Kizarny promos.

I think it has made its way onto some random list videos, I hated seeing the footage felt like it stuck with me for the rest of the day

Given how many people have died in ring or because of freak accident like Owen's, it's something of a minor miracle for good taste the vast majority happened before camera phones were common.

outside of legal reasons, why would anyone want to intentionally watch that tape? Mostly the people that are into the faces of death style stuff or depraved things of legend like Owen's death.

I don't get why people would want to see it, or any other "lost footage" of people dying. Lost Media Wiki has a section just for real life death footage and I don't understand the appeal. Plus, the stuff people are apparently clamoring to see includes this, Dawn Brancheau (the Seaworld employee who was attacked and killed by a killer whale) and Christine Chubbuck's suicide. Ignoring the content itself, I highly doubt the families would want the footage of their loved one's death readily available for viewing on YouTube or Dailymotion...

It absolutely exists... as stated a camera would have been on him to catch the entrance, as well as the hard cam always runs.

Yeah, I'm in no hurry to watch any footage there may or may not be of Owen's death.

I was afraid that someone had pulled a Wicked Witch on Sesame Street with this, and that would be like the polar opposite of the joy I felt then.

There’s an audience for footage like the Owen tape, and to each their own, like what you like, but I ain’t a part of that audience.
